After a young woman’s fiancé is killed in Iraq, an eccentric elderly woman and a handsome new friend help her bury her fears and dare to dream and love again.

Heather DeLuca drew in deep breaths and slowed her pace. Sweating from her brisk three-mile run in the chilly April morning, she unzipped her jacket. Inhaling the crisp air redolent with the sweet scent of spring flowers carried on the slight breeze, she strode along the sidewalk, anticipating home and a refreshing shower. She loved the small Pennsylvania town where she lived and worked. It was close enough to Philadelphia to feed her need for museums and culture but far enough from the city to give her a feeling of community.

A smiling couple, holding hands, strolled past. Their happiness touched the core of loneliness in her for love and male companionship. She had friends who cared about her and a close family. She didn’t need anyone else.

    Who are you kidding?

Down the street, a good-looking guy about her age set out a wooden sign in front of one of the shops. Curious, she walked closer. The building had been empty for the past year, but lately the place had been a hive of activity with a construction crew making renovations. A banner announced a coffee shop would open there.

When the tall, muscular guy finished placing the sign, he looked up. Smiling broadly, he watched her approach.

She stopped and read the sign: Dana’s Brew Spot. You’re open already? she asked, not meeting his gaze. I love coffee.

Then I hope we see you often. His deep voice slid through her like rich, freshly brewed espresso.

I… She raised her gaze to meet his incredible eyes. Turquoise rimmed by thick black lashes. She couldn’t look away. The awareness lighting his eyes tapped into something inside her she’d suppressed these past three years. Her pulse jumped and words dried in her throat.

    He frowned. You were saying?
