Sarah Smith

Making a career goal come true, Sarah has completed her first children's book. The book started out as a short story requirement in an assignment while completing a course at the Institute of Children's Literature. After completing the course, I concentrated on my career in the corporate world. Not feeling fully satisfied with the corporate world and needing the funds to survive, I continued in the corporate world until my retirement in 2012. Always knowing that I wanted to complete my book, I started down the road to accomplish the goal. The dream has finally surfaced again and I'm on my way. Thanks to the help of Smashwords, I have found a way to publish my book on the internet which I've always believe was the best way to get your book to as many readers as possible.

    Chapter One

When Maddy O'Reilly arrived in London she was tired, hungry and irritable. She'd left her home in County Cork, three days earlier and the journey had been insufferable. The ship between Dublin and Liverpool had incurred the wrath of the Irish Sea, and she'd spent most of the time hanging over the rail, emptying the contents of her stomach into the foaming water below.

Once in England, she'd missed the coach from Liverpool to London and she'd been forced to spend a night in a dubious looking inn, in the dock area. She hadn't slept for fear of robbery or worse. Maddy was a strikingly beautiful woman and more than one drunken sailor had looked her over with his roving eye when she'd come to the inn to ask for a room. The next day she took the coach to London and was thrown about as badly as at sea.

''Let me help you with your case,'' a young man offered as she walked from the coach to the pavement.

''I'm perfectly capable of carrying it myself. Or do you think women are feeble?'' she hissed at him.

''I was only trying to help,'' he said apologetically.

''Well as you can see, I don't need your help.'' She glared at him until he walked away. He stood across the road, at a safe distance, and looked at her. How could such a beautiful young woman be so rude, he wondered?

She stood on the pavement looking left and right, waiting for someone to make themselves known to her. The last leg of her journey was to be from Victoria Coach Station to Sloane Square, Aunt Jane's house.

    ''Miss O'Reilly?''

    ''Yes.''

    ''I'm Parks, Lady Barnum's driver.''

''Where have you been? I expected you half an hour ago. I'm very cold indeed.'' Parks looked at her in the same way the young man had a few minutes earlier. Beautiful, but quite the most impolite woman I've ever met, he thought.

He'd heard the Irish were difficult people. He didn't reply to her. When he bent to pick up her bag she snatched it from him. ''I don't need a man to help me.''

    Parks closed the door to
