Ismiled at a pretty girl who was leaning on the bar. I saw that she was with someone, someone who had his hand on her waist. I wasn’t afraid of the competition.
Before Kandalph sent a team to any planet, they got their researchers to figure out the customs of the natives. Terra 5, what the inhabitants called Earth, was a little backwoods planet that hadn’t yet joined the Intergalactic Federation. They had no idea about the rest of the universe, which made them a place ripe for picking.
Kandalph had plenty of mercenaries, and we could be called for a variety of projects. I was on the extraction team. Whenever somebody requested a Bride, we could deliver one.
Our team had it down to a science. They studied the anatomy of any species that we stole before we did. Then, we would change their body to adhere to the beauty standards of the species on the planet where we would make the delivery. We also did a close study on the neurotransmitters inside of their bodies to make them happy and comfortable where they were. We guaranteed that if a girl didn’t fit into the new planet by the time that they had been there for a year, our client could send her back and get a new one. It made us focus on quality.
We created detailed psychological profiles on every Bride that we caught. We looked for open-minded women. We never stole children, and we respected whatever age the native species set as the age of adulthood.
But beyond that, we’d take anybody, including the blonde who was currently smiling at me. I pushed my way through the crowd to get to her.
Can I buy you a drink?
Our researchers said that that short phrase was how most of the interactions in bars started.
She’s with me.
It’s okay, Vikas.
I could see the regret in her eyes. I’m sorry, I’m here with somebody.
She flicked her eyes over me; I knew that she found me attractive from the way that her pupils dilated, something that apparently signaled attraction in human females. But I’ve got a friend who is single. Maybe you should give her a call. Here, look,
she told me, bringing out her phone. She tapped it a few times before I saw a picture of a small, pretty blonde human.
Cute. Is she here?
I tried to make extractions as simple and fast as possible. The more time we spent on planet, the harder it was to keep our presence a secret. Terra 5 was a goldmine of fertile females, rare throughout the universe, and we wanted to keep it that way. We went to a country where women moved about freely, not cooped up inside of houses. Right now, I was in the place that called itself the United States of America. We had a secondary team that was working on placing some of our own people inside of their so-called federal government.
It never hurt to lay the groundwork for future contracts here; we’d definitely be back for more women in the near future. Fertile females were always good for business.
No, she’s not. But you should give her a call. I’ll tell her to give you a chance.
The blonde had taken a pen out of her purse and wrote quickly on a napkin before handing it to me.
Jennifer Samson?
That’s her.
The blonde bit her lip. Be gentle, okay? She’s a little shy.
I didn’t know if a shy woman would fit my ideal psychological profile for a Bride, so I just nodded and told her, Thank you.
I moved away from the blonde and her overly protective male companion. I could kill him in an instant, of course, but I didn’t want to draw any unnecessary attention to myself. I’d keep hunting.
First Try

It didn’t take long before I caught the eye of quite a beauty. She was small and curvy with fiery hair, and I thought that she’d be quite attractive as a Bride. We’d enhance her, of course, but we couldn’t make a beautiful woman out of a hideous one. If one of our client didn’t like the way that his delivered Bride looked, we’d fix her appearance until she looked like what he needed.
Brides came at a high price. We were mercenaries, so we would accept money. More often than not, though, these contracts were paid in favors. Sometimes they were favors held in reserve. Sometimes we used the favors immediately to push events in our favor. Kandalph Space Marines, Inc. had not become one of the most powerful corporations in the known universe by slacking off. Our leaders made sure that we could go where we wanted, take what we needed, and never face any repercussions. We were only careful on Terra 5 while we were still putting our agents into the local government; once it was done, we’d move freely and perhaps openly.
I didn’t mind the illusion that I had to project here, though. It was only a little different from my own natural appearance. The humans here relied on something called GooGo far too much, and it was easy enough to create an identity for Brandon Anderson, an M&A investment banker. Women all across the universe were attracted to money and power, so we made sure that any persona that we created was attractive. Our scientists and researchers made scents that would attract the Brides we wanted to steal, designed to trigger the chemicals that simulated falling in love.
This time, my prey came towards me. She moved smoothly, confidently, her shoulders back, her chin held high. She might do.
She came closer to me, and
