I love this series and this one is no exception. Love the characters, Erica and Detective Patrik Hedström. This one follow the similar narrative of the series, the story line is a bit weak and somewhat more predictable than the previous ones. Still a good read.

Almost 500 pages of extraneous domestic details. It was taking forever to get to the point so I gave up.

Another book I would have enjoyed far more if the author hadn't taken the easy out and decided that someone with a mental health problem was the killer. How many times do people have to shout that those with mental health problems are far more likely to be the victims of crime then the perpetrators. This frustrates me so much, it's just lazy, stigmatising and boringly repetative.Or maybe I should just get off my high horse.

I picked this book up on a whim – the front cover had caught my attention and the first page made me curious. Never having read any of Camilla Lackberg’s writing before I was in for quite a ride! “The Drowning” is written in the perspective of multiple people and has a dual story line (e.g. one based on memories, flashbacks and another based on a present day murder mystery). The intertwining of characters and stories sets a fast pace and motivates the reader to plunge further into the novel’s depths. Day-to-day life and relationships become anything but monotonous. In fact, I think that Lackberg uses the coziness of everyday life to lull you into a false hope that the underlying horrors and tragedies that make this book a murder mystery don’t really exist. This is a book that will keep you coming back for more and will keep you guessing until the last page and then leave you stunned and shocked.

I've really liked this series up until this book. In this particular book, I had the situation figured out before page 150. All of her books have a set of circumstances that link to the past. In this one, those links seemed to stretch the limits of credibility more than the others....ie. the understanding of schizophrenia, and the link between the initial drowning attempt and the one that sent Christian over the edge.Next on my list is The Lost Boy which will determine whether I finish out the series.

The Drowning is the sixth in the Swedish crime series featuring police detective Patrik Hedström and his wife Erica Falck, a "true crime" author. The small town of Fjällbacka now has another famous author besides Erica. Christian Thydell, a librarian in Fjällbacka, has published his novel The Mermaid to much critical acclaim. Erica feels especially proud because she helped him edit the book. But what should be a happy time for Christian is ruined by his receipt of threatening letters, always on the same type of paper and written by the same hand. Erica thinks the police should be involved, and pockets one of the letters to show to Patrick. Patrik however is too busy to devote much attention to them; he is absorbed by trying to find Magnus Kjellner, who has been missing for three months and is believed to be dead. When Kjellner's body is found, the investigation heats up. This can only be positive, since it seems to be the first time the police notice that Kjellner basically only had three close friends, one of whom was Christian, and none of whom was apparently even interviewed about the disappearance. The other two, Erik and Kenneth, are also getting the letters, although neither has told anyone else. But clearly, something is rotten in the state of Sweden. The stories of each of these stories alternate with flashbacks from the life of a young boy who underwent terrible abuse, and then became a bit psychotic himself. It is obvious his story is connected to what is happening in the present.Discussion: Läckberg is a good writer, and while I cannot read the original in Swedish, the translation work by Tiina Nunnally seems very competent; the prose flows smoothly and one doesn’t notice any awkwardness in the dialogue. The story is a bit repetitive with respect to the situation of all of the wives; the jokes about Erica’s size (she is pregnant with twins) grow old after a bit, and the cringing submissiveness and abuse of the other wives is too belabored. Similarly, the shocking incompetency of Patrick’s boss is overworked. In previous books by this author, she also interposed “lifestyle” sequences to break up the tension, but I think in this case, too much rehearsing of the same issues became monotonous and frustrating. Evaluation: In spite of a few quibbles, I like this police procedural series a great deal. The writing is competent and the main characters are likable. While the mystery in this particular book gets solved, the storyline germane to the series itself has a cliffhanger ending, and I look forward to finding out how matters progress.

An atmospheric police procedural featuring Patrik Hedstrom and Erica Falck centring on a debut novellist, Christian Thydell & 3 male friends. Someone is sending them anonymous letters and then one is murdered. There's a lot of detail - perhaps too much & there were places when I would have liked Camilla Lackberg to cut to the chase. Nonetheless worth reading.

The ending of this book was not at all what I expected, or ever would have wanted! That said... this is a great book, it has it all. Like plot twists, more questions than answers until the end, and/or really screwed up people? Then you're in luck, it's all here!

I really loved reading this book. It has all the ingredients for a spectacular thriller: secret histories, revenge and dark memories. Lackberg is so talented in giving tiny amounts of information that keep you hooked from beginning to end. Somewhere near the end I started hoping Lackberg wouldn't give me a farfetched ending to the story. But alas... having a cross-dressing schizofrenic is not my idea of a brilliant ending - I would have given this book more stars if the ending had been as as good as the rest of the story.

This is the sixth in the Erika Falck/Patrick Hedstrom series, and the series is still going strong -- though there were times in this novel when I began to wonder. As the novel begins, a writer friend of Erica's has just published his first novel, and it is a roaring success -- but he's remote and distressed. He's been getting anonymous letters, and his best friend has disappeared. The plot thickens and the bodies start to accumulate, all leading up to a smashing conclusion. The book is a compelling read, but does at times feel a little formulaic, and does at times get my old improbability meter ticking pretty loudly. Why then do I say that the series is still going strong? Because the ending has such a riveting twist that I have ordered a copy of the next in the series -- and that's what a series is supposed to do.

In the new book of the series once again unearthed old sins are propelling the story. The characters and the storyline are excellent as usual but the solution and explanation are a bit.... cheap and can be familiar from somewhere else.

A little confusing in the beginning, many characters and many different strands to this story. Easier for me since I have read this series from the beginning so was at least familiar with many of the detectives and police officers. Erica and Patrick and their friends and families. This is a slow burner, a missing person case, a friend of Erica getting a book contract but also receiving threatening notes. All parties involved claim not to know anything, are harboring secrets. Bits and pieces are distributed here and there but the solution is elusive and the answer when it comes it both horrifying and incredible. Not until the very end did I figure this one out, exactly when I believe the author wanted me to.Atmospheric, some really good characters and a mystery hard to solve. The ending is a cliffhanger, so now I await the next book.

Another fantastic book by Camilla Lackberg. This was actually one of my favorites. Big cliffhangers at the end even though the mystery in this book is solved. I want to read what is happening next but I can't seem to find whether or not the new book, Lost Boy is out in the US or not. It doesn't seem to be and that is really frustrating as it came out in the UK and Canada this spring. Why can't I read it too?

I read about 1/3 of this book before deciding I wasn't going to finish it. I didn't like the way the author jumped around to the various character's stories and felt it prohibited good character development. At the time I put the book down I had no bond developed with any of the characters, nor did I particularly like any of them or have any strong feeling about them either way.

An interesting mystery - I appreciated the psychological twist towards the end. I did wonder if this book could have been more concise, but overall the story was enjoyable and keep me guessing.

I've enjoyed the Erica Falck and Patrik Hedstrom series. I assume it is doing well in sales, so I can't imagine why Lackberg needed to write this horrid cliff hanger ending. Was she afraid she was losing readers and that was the only way to assure an audience for the next book? This was a fairly interesting mystery, but the cheesy ending spoiled the whole book for me. I doubt I'll carry on with her.

As I was reading this book I began to think it was a series and it is. Fascinating look into a Swedish murder investigation. From watching thousands of murder tv shows I was wondering about computer searches and the such but it progressed along nicely and the mystery drama rose to a descent crecendro. Then there was the cliff hanger ending assuring another installation in the series. Which I will read. And rest assure I will go read the previous novels as soon as possible. Good new author for me.
