About this ebook
Improving on earlier lexical works, A New Reader's Lexicon of the Greek New Testament incorporates all words that occur fewer than fifty times in the New Testament. In canonical order, it catalogs a word's frequency in each book,in each author's writings, and in the entire New Testament. References to rare or noteworthy word usages are included, allowing the reader to quickly identify words of special significance.
"This lexicon . . . has overcome the noticeable shortcomings of Kubo and should well serve the person who wants to keep up their Greek by daily reading, but gets frustrated by having to spend so much time looking up words." -Gordon D. Fee Professor of New Testament Studies Regent College
"A New Reader's Lexicon is a step forward for the student of Greek and is sure to be of benefit to those who teach Greek. . . . The use of A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature (BDAG) is a great touch."-Darrell L. Bock Research Professor of New Testament Studies Dallas Theological Seminary
"Very usable, exceedingly helpful, and a fine contribution to any student of the Word interested in serious reading of the Greek New Testament."-Grant Osborne Professor of the New Testament Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

Foreword
When Sakae Kubo’s A Reader’s Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament was issued by a major publisher in 1975, it had an influence on the study of the Greek New Testament that few could have predicted. Kubo’s Lexicon redefined how Greek was taught in seminaries and Bible colleges: students would now learn the vocabulary of the New Testament down to a frequency of fifty times, and rely on Kubo to help with the translation of the text whenever the vocabulary involved words that occurred less than fifty times. Kubo not only helped students translate much more quickly (since looking up every unknown word, in its lexical form, in Walter Bauer’s Lexicon was no longer needed), but by his ingenious system of noting word frequency (first for the book, then for the whole New Testament) he assisted the reader in gaining insights into an author’s emphases.
But as helpful as Kubo was, there were weaknesses. First, it was not updated to the glosses found in the third edition of the Bauer Lexicon (BDAG). Second, there were numerous errors (involving word frequency numbers, omissions of words, inappropriate glosses, etc.) that went uncorrected. Third, the special vocabulary section at the beginning of each book, involving all the words that occurred more than five times in that book but less than fifty times in the New Testament, created its own problems: designed for efficiency of space, it did not prove helpful for efficiency in learning.
A New Reader’s Lexicon of the Greek New Testament (NRL), by Michael H. Burer and Jeffrey E. Miller, has resolved all such weaknesses. This in itself is no mean accomplishment. NRL has even improved on the strengths of Kubo. In particular, the threefold tagging of word frequency (book, author, New Testament) has made this volume invaluable not only for the beginning and intermediate student, but also the exegete. I have for a long time wanted to see at a glance the favored lexical stock of a particular author, not only in terms of the book I was studying but also his other contributions to the canon. As well, issues related to authorship (as far as vocabulary can give us insights) have needed a ready table of information. NRL supplies this information at a glance by listing the frequency of words according to the traditional authorship of New Testament books. Thus, for example, the corpus Paulinum includes all thirteen letters to which his name is attached.
Any tool that can simultaneously function well on multiple levels—pedagogical and reference, translation and exegesis—is rare indeed. What Kubo did for the last generation, Burer and Miller’s NRL will do for the next.

Preface
Unfamiliar vocabulary proves to be an enduring challenge for students of New Testament Greek. Even students who understand the rules of the language get bogged down having to look up uncommon words while translating. Nevertheless the correct interpretation of many passages of Scripture hinges on the meaning of its rare words. A New Reader’s Lexicon of the Greek New Testament (NRL) is written for students learning Greek in seminaries, universities, and Bible colleges, as well as pastors and serious laypeople wishing to read the New Testament in its original language. Having the NRL opened next to a copy of the Greek New Testament solves the problem of rare vocabulary and enables the student to translate without interruption while unlocking the meaning of the text.
Contextual Definitions
The NRL lists and concisely defines in context every word that occurs fewer than fifty times in the New Testament (NT). There is no special vocabulary section for each NT book, and proper names and places are included. This format is designed to facilitate uninterrupted reading and translation of the NT. The contextual definitions were drawn from W. Bauer, F. W. Danker, W. F. Arndt, and F. W. Gingrich, A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature, 3d ed. (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2000). The BDAG lexicon should be consulted regularly during NT study for the range of possible meanings for important words as well as a wealth of helpful exegetical information; such detail is beyond the scope of the NRL, which focuses solely on contextual definitions. Occasionally other standard lexica were used to supply or supplement the contextual definitions, including H. G. Liddell, R. Scott, and H. S. Jones, A Greek-English Lexicon, 9th ed. with revised supplement in 1996 (Oxford: Clarendon, 1940); and J. P. Louw and E. A. Nida, Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament: Based on Semantic Domains, 2d ed. (New York: United Bible Societies, 1989).
Statistics
The NRL includes computer-generated statistics for each entry based on the standard NA27/UBS4 Greek New Testament. These word frequencies can be shared with—and readily understood by—a Bible class or congregation. The NRL introduces the three-number system in books traditionally written by authors of multiple Bible books: Lukan, Johannine, Pauline, and Petrine corpora comprise more than 75 percent of the chapters in the NT. The three-number system provides a wealth of information pertaining to a word’s usage in the NT:
The first number indicates how many times the word appears in the book at hand.
The second number indicates how many times the word appears in all canonical works by the traditional author of the book at hand.
The third number indicates how many times the word appears in the entire NT.
For example, the word καθεξῆς (in order, one after the other
) in Luke 1:3 is accompanied by 2∙5∙5. These numbers inform the reader that the word appears only twice in the gospel of Luke, three times in the book of Acts (traditionally written by Luke), and is used by no other NT writer. In 1 Corinthians 5:3, the word κατεργάζομαι (achieve, accomplish, do
) is accompanied by 1∙20∙22. This means that the word occurs once in 1 Corinthians, twenty times in the entire Pauline corpus, and only twice elsewhere in the NT.
Cross References
Cross references based on the three statistical categories are included.
When a word occurs in three or fewer verses in a book aside from the current verse, those references will be listed first.
When a word occurs in three or fewer verses within a traditional author but outside the current book, those references will be listed next. (This would not apply to authors who wrote only one book.)
When a word occurs in three or fewer verses outside the current author, those references will be listed last.
The number three
was chosen somewhat randomly, but it achieves the authors’ desire to provide quick access within a limited space to rare and noteworthy occurrences of a word outside the context at hand. Such cross references give the student a head start on the many word studies that will be required for a proper understanding of the text. Consider the following illustrations.
In Revelation, most entries for the word καπνός (smoke
) read as follows:
καπνός, ὁ 12∙12∙13 smoke (Ac 2:19)
This means that the word appears twelve times in Revelation and in no other book in the Johannine corpus. Since the number of other occurrences in the book is more than three verses, no references within Revelation are given. But the student interested in studying the one occurrence of the word outside of the Johannine corpus is pointed to Acts 2:19. In Romans 3:25, the entry for προτίθημι (to display publicly
) reads as follows:
προτίθημι 2∙3∙3 display publicly, make available publicly
(1:13 ● Ep 1:9)
This means that the word appears twice in Romans, three times in the Pauline corpus, and no other times in the NT. Since the word occurs only one other time in Romans and only one other time within Paul outside Romans, those references are listed.
Some Production Guidelines the Authors Followed
The authors listed the bold-italics definition from BDAG as our definition in the vast majority of entries.
When BDAG did not provide a bold-italics definition—or if, in our judgment, the bold-italics definition in BDAG was unclear—the authors often chose to list instead the plain-italics contextual definition or add additional wording from BDAG without alerting the reader. In some instances, additional lexica were consulted.
Editorial changes to BDAG’s definition were placed in brackets.
When words could have reasonably had more than one acceptable lexical form, the authors followed the BDAG entry. For example, we reproduced BDAG’s listing of the middle form ἐκλέγομαι rather than the active form ἐκλέγω found in LSJ. We likewise followed BDAG’s preference for the standard lexical form of adjectives, which are anarthrous, even when a word functioned substantivally in a particular context with the appropriate article. This would also apply to words formed by crasis.
When BDAG listed more than one possible gender for a word, the authors included all potential articles and separated them with a slash.
When BDAG provided multiple forms in its lexical entry, the authors listed all forms and separated them with a slash.
When BDAG listed more than one possible categorical definition for a word, the authors included them all, separated by a semicolon. In such cases, the reader should refer to BDAG for further study on the possible meanings of the word before rendering a final translation.
When the same word occurred more than once in a verse, the authors included the number of occurrences in brackets (e.g., [2] or [3]) next to the first occurrence of the word in the verse and then omitted subsequent entries. If BDAG defined these repeated words differently in the same verse, the authors included each occurrence with their context-specific definition and did not include [2] or [3] with the first entry.
Challenges and Trivia
The authors faced three significant challenges throughout production. The first pertained to the philosophical difference between a definition and a translation. In this case our goal to provide a faithful definition conflicted with our goal to enable the student to translate rapidly. We ultimately chose to provide definitions, not translations, and so the reader will be required to consider the context when moving from definition to translation. This decision on the part of the authors is evident with idioms or metaphors in the text. For example, τράπεζα in Luke 19:23 literally means table,
which is the definition listed in the NRL. In this context, however, it refers not to a table as such but to the place where money changers would do business. This is appropriately translated bank
by many modern translations.
A second challenge the authors often faced pertained to lexical evolution. Language, by its very nature, evolves at the grammatical, syntactical, and lexical levels. We found ourselves constantly having to make decisions that were neither right nor wrong—and on which standard lexica disagreed. In these instances, our goal was to be as consistent as possible while accurately reflecting the language used in the Greek NT. This is seen multiple times in the way word entries are handled, including the listing of by-forms, rare irregular forms, and the statistics given for homonyms.
A third challenge involved textual criticism. Certain passages are textually suspect and relegated to the textual apparatus in both NA27 and UBS4, while others are textually suspect but printed in the text of the NT and marked with brackets. In order to maintain consistency in the way we handled statistics generated from the critical text, we decided to base our statistics on the text of NA27 and UBS4 as printed, which does include certain textually suspect passages. The most well-known of these are the Shorter Ending of Mark, the Longer Ending of Mark, and the pericopae adulterae in John. The reader should understand that statistics in the NRL include word occurrences in these passages.
The authors also stumbled upon some fascinating trivia during production:
Twenty percent (or one in five) of all NT words occur fewer than fifty times.
κίνδυνος, ὁ (danger, risk
) occurs eight times in 2 Corinthians 11:26.
Every word in 2 Timothy 3:3 appears in the NRL (i.e., each word appears fewer than fifty times in the NT).
Only 525 verses do not contain a single word that occurs fewer than fifty times.
ἀλλοτριεπίσκοπος, ὁin 1 Peter 4:15 is one of the longest words with the longest definition appearing in the NRL.
The longest lexical form in the NT is τεσσαρεσκαιδέκατος (eighteen letters long) found in Acts 27:27, 33.
The longest inflected form in the NT is προκεχειροτονημένοις (twenty letters long) found in Acts 10:41.
Revelation 21:20 contains eight hapax legomena, the most for any verse in the NT.
The NT chapter with the fewest rare words is John 17. No word in the chapter occurs fewer than eleven times in the NT.
The NRL contains over 40,000 cross references.
