About this ebook

31 Days of Wisdom is a daily devotional which takes a verse or two from the Book of Proverbs and offers an introspective look at what the writers of Proverbs have to say about obtaining wisdom. Chris Shumate offers details from his personal life about obtaining wisdom and then asks questions for the reader to consider that will take them deeper in their walk with Christ, regardless of how deep it is at the time of starting the devotional.

31 Days of Wisdom - Chris Shumate

    One

    Day 1 of Wisdom

A wise man will hear and increase in learning, and a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel. —Proverbs 1:5

Since God saved me from my sins, I have been on a mission to understand Him more, intellectually and spiritually. When I first heard of Jesus's work, how He died to ransom sinners who would call upon His name, I was convinced that I needed to know Him more in all ways. Likewise, I acquired wise counsel—actually, wise counsel acquired me. The people who led and had an impact on me early in my walk were wise Christ-followers who had sought me out. This, however, isn't the case for everyone.

As I grew in the Lord, I had opportunities to become more involved with other Christ-followers in social and ministry settings. The biggest part of my growth in faith that helped me is refusing to say no to opportunities as a young believer. If I was given an opportunity to serve with other godly men I took full advantage of that opportunity. My wife still gets on to me for my enthusiasm to say yes to opportunities to serve with our already busy schedule. When a believer asks us to pray about going through a study with them, we should pray about it, but we shouldn’t let our waiting on the Lord guide us to not make a decision.

If you are a young believer, or perhaps not a strong believer, take opportunities to grow in Christ with others who are where you want to be one day. It isn't about accomplishing something for God; it is about God accomplishing something in you. When you hear something from God in a sermon, devotional, podcast or wherever, seek to know it deeper. When you seek counsel from godly believers, you show that you don't have all the answers; what you have is understanding because you are seeking their counsel.

    Daily Reflection

Think of someone further along in their walk with Christ that you can start a one-on-one relationship with. What would you want from that relationship? Once you've identified who that person is, ask them out to coffee or lunch and tell them what you're looking for.

    Day 2 of Wisdom

For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding. —Proverbs 2:6

The Christian Bible is God's spoken word (2 Timothy 3:16) given to us. Given the historical way the Bible was put together, we can immediately disregard other books that are not in the Bible as not being Scripture, meaning not God-breathed. Though they may be good books written by men and women of faith, books outside of the canon of the Christian Bible should not be considered from God's mouth.

I say this to emphasize that many scholars of Christian theology have written great things about God, which help us know more about Him. One of my all-time favorites is Wayne Grudem’s Bible Doctrine. It’s full of insightful teachings on dozens of topics. It has helped me know communicable and incommunicable attributes of God. Spiritual gifts became more clear to me while reading it. In my opinion, though, Bible Doctrine, with all of its greatness, is not without error. There are many discussions Grudem addresses with which I don’t agree. In those instances, I seek the Bible to see what God says and cross-reference with other scholars.

Reading books on theology is a great way to aid our studies of Scripture. However, theologians’ books should never take the place of reading the Bible for ourselves. While my prayer is this devotional draws you closer to God, it would be negligent not to read the Bible daily also.

Since God's Word is the Bible—His spoken words to us penned by men under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit—we can trust that God's Word is good and truly His. His Word gives us knowledge, understanding, and wisdom. Read books by great Bible teachers, but do not neglect the reading of God's spoken Word for your wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. Only through God that
