About this ebook

The end is near—while these often seem to be the words of insane rambling, they can also be a sensible presentation of truth. Acknowledging that what is yet to come is beyond the scope of our wildest projections, pastor and scholar Erwin Lutzer reminded us in The King is Coming that we have not been left completely in the dark.

Now small groups can grapple with the content of The King is Coming together through this study guide experience. This guide provides answers for those questioning what comes next – and empowers and instructs participants to live accordingly in the here and now.

The King is Coming Study Guide is supplemented by The King is Coming DVD, which provides accompanying teachings by Pastor Lutzer for a full small group experience.

    Introduction

THIS STUDY GUIDE is to be used with the book and DVD series, both of which are titled The King Is Coming, by Erwin Lutzer (available from Moody Publishers).

This guide is intended for both individual and group use. When used in a group setting, this guide will be helpful for both the group leader and participants who wish to read the relevant sections of the book and respond to the DVD presentations together. It might also be helpful to take notes or to begin considering the questions in each section while watching the DVD.

This guide is based primarily on the book, but the available DVD is a valuable supplement. In it, Dr. Lutzer summarizes key concepts, shares personal stories and insights, and offers advice and cautions. Each DVD session, set in his office, creates a casual tone that will promote the informal setting of small groups as they prepare to discuss the book. As Pastor Lutzer points out, watching each session of the DVD is not a substitute for reading each chapter of the book. Still, the DVD will reinforce and amplify concepts within the book.

Depending on the time available in your class or small group, your leader may choose to discuss only a portion of the Questions for Discussion. Be sure to prepare by reading both the particular chapter for the week and A Summary from the Book in this study guide.

    The King Returns for Us

    A Summary from the Book

FOR MANY OF US, the return of Jesus often seems theoretical, far off, and quite irrelevant to our daily lives. We think that prophecy is something that can only be understood by mature Christians, and that new believers need other kinds of doctrine.

But Paul the apostle strongly disagreed with that notion. Instead, he taught that prophecy is intended for every believer because the return of Jesus is to be our focus and hope. When Paul spoke to new believers, he taught them about the return of Jesus. For this church planter, prophecy was the heartbeat of his life and ministry.

In 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18, Paul taught them (and us) that there would be an entire generation of Christians alive at the return of Jesus. He described this event in 1 Corinthians 15:51–52: Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed—in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. When he wrote that we shall not all sleep, he was referring to death: not all Christians will die, they will be instantly translated into heaven when the rapture happens.

The Latin word for caught up is rapturo, from which we get the word rapture. The day is coming when living Christians, like iron filings attracted to a magnet, will be caught up to be with the Lord and each other forever. The
