Jonathan Edwards on Heaven and Hell
()
About this ebook
We must reacquaint modern Christians with the eschatologically driven preaching and teaching of Edwards. This word “eschatological” may trip some readers up at first encounter, but it refers simply to “last things”, things of eternity and ultimate significance. We exhume Edwards' scripturally fired material on the reality of the afterlife, the terror of hell, the glories of heaven, and the shape life must take in light of these realities.
If we accept the Word as our authority, and if we will allow Edwards to serve as our faithful and imaginative guide, we will find that God is alive. He is Lord of heaven and earth, the sovereign ruler of all Creation. He is not small. He can be found. He is not silent on the afterlife, and His testimony calls for our attention, our concern, and our whole-hearted worship and trust.
Easily accessible and readable, you do not need to be a scholar to enjoy these insights about Jonathan Edwards and his writings.

Jonathan Edwards on Heaven and Hell - Owen Strachan
Minnesota
The question of the afterlife is, for many today, one of preference. Christians trained to evangelize unsaved people with the question, If you were to die today, do you know where you would go—heaven or hell?
are sometimes perplexed when met with the response, I don’t believe in heaven or hell.
Heard once, this answer fails to deter us; heard twice, we began to wonder what’s up; heard a dozen times, we realize that something in our culture had changed. The ground has shifted beneath our feet.
It was not always so. In fact, in most parts of the world in most eras of history, people had little clue that they could conveniently opt out of an eschatological (or eternity-focused) life. The Christian worldview, for centuries the most popular system of belief in the West, posited the existence of two realms, heaven and hell, which received either the eternally saved or the eternally lost, respectively. Though belief has waxed and waned over the last two millennia, most people have stared the reality of these two realms in the face. For most people of the past, mortality was not a distant prospect, one that could be pushed off for years, even decades. It was a constant reality. Whether they wanted to or not, most people had to confront death and the afterlife on a regular basis, whether from life circumstances or from religious instruction.
It is the purpose of this book to reacquaint modern Christians and other interested readers with the eschatologically driven preaching and teaching of Jonathan Edwards. This word eschatological
may trip some readers up at first encounter, but as noted above, it refers simply to last things,
things of eternity and ultimate significance. This volume will present Edwards’s material on the reality of the afterlife, the terror of hell, the glories of heaven, and the shape life must take in light of these truths. In doing so, it will illuminate the depth and richness of Edwards’s thinking on the afterlife.
We interact extensively in Jonathan Edwards on Heaven and Hell with the actual writing of Edwards. It will take a little time to get used to his style, but it is our belief that investing even a little effort in reading his writing will yield a huge spiritual payoff. We will mix in our commentary on his writing even as we sketch a general picture of his understanding of heaven and hell. As we go, we will offer brief suggestions for application of his views that we hope will be of use to you in your personal reading or in the context of group
