Introduction to the
Book of Acts
_________________________________
The Writer
This book comes from the same pen as the Gospel of Luke (ACTS 1:1; cf. LUKE 1:3). Examination of the two abundantly confirms this. Traditions of the early church ascribe the book of Acts to Luke.
Acts in several instances refers to incidents mentioned elsewhere in Luke. For instance, the command to tarry in Jerusalem (LUKE 24:49), the return of the eleven to the city after the ascension (LUKE 24:52), the catalogue of the apostles (LUKE 6:14-16), Stephen’s prayer (ACTS 7:60) which is an echo of the words of Jesus preserved only by Luke (LUKE 23:34). More than fifty words used in Luke and Acts are not found elsewhere in the New Testament.
The Man
Luke was a physician ( COLOSSIANS 4:14). He was Paul’s medical adviser and doubtless rescued his life on several occasions. He was a real medical missionary.
Luke was Paul’s almost constant companion (PHILEMON 24; II TIMOTHY 4:11). He was with Paul during his second Roman imprisonment, and his devotion to the apostle in the time of peril was beautiful.
The use of medical terms in the description of maladies is a mark both of Luke’s Gospel and the book of Acts. In LUKE 4:38 he refers to the high temperature of Simon’s wife’s mother; in LUKE 8:43, 44 he tells of the hemorrhages of a certain woman; in ACTS 3:7 he explains that the cripple who was lame first received his strength in his feet and ankle bones; in ACTS 12:23 he explains that Herod had worms; in ACTS 13:11 he says that Elymas lost his sight gradually; in ACTS 28:8, speaking of the father of Publius, he mentions his high temperature and bloody issue.
Purpose of the Book
Acts is a continuation of the former treatise. The Gospel of Luke shows the Son of Man at work. Acts shows the Holy Spirit at work. The opening sentences of Acts are an explanation of the closing sentences of Luke. His Gospel records the revelation of the heavenly kingdom and of its foundations in the person and work of the Lord Jesus. Acts describes the royal administration of that kingdom by the power of the Holy Spirit.
In the Old Testament God was at work for man; in the Gospels Christ was at work with man; in the Acts the Holy Spirit was at work in man.
It is a striking fact that Acts records a period of thirty-three years, which was approximately the length of the life of Jesus recorded in the Gospels.
Title of the Book
Our Bible gives the title as The Acts of the Apostles.
It is certain that the author did not give this title. It is not a record of the acts of the apostles, as it contains no detailed account of the work of any apostle except Peter and Paul. It is a record of the workings of the Holy Spirit, who is mentioned about seventy times. The Acts of the Holy Spirit
would be a good title for this book, for from first to last it is a record of His advent and activity. Men are seen here only as His instruments. In every chapter the careful student will see the Holy Spirit in some aspect of His work. For this reason the book has been called an excellent handbook for soul winners.
Theme of the Book
The theme of this book is clearly stated in ACTS 1:8: But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Note particularly that the same gospel which was declared to the Jews was to go to the whole world (cf. MATTHEW 28:19, 20). The book of Acts shows how the teaching of the apostles was begun in each of the appointed fields referred to in verse 8.

Ye shall be witnesses
Our Lord has two bodies—His literal body and His spiritual body the Church. In his Gospel Luke gives the history of Christ’s physical presence among men. In Acts
