El peregrino es el haj Ibrahim al Soukori, muktar del pueblo de Tabah, en la ruta de Jerusalén. Tiene derecho al título de haj porque ha viajado a la Meca, obligación de los creyentes musulmanes que pueden permitírselo.
Los vaivenes de la historia, que golpean con fuerza a su pueblo, y su amistad con el judío Gideon lo obligan a emigrar a Jordania. Allí le espera el sino de los desterrados y la tentación de la algarada de quienes han sido desposeídos.
Pero su mayor desventura vendrá de su retoño, porque el haj tiene un hijo.
A pesar de que Ibrahim cree en la amistad de los dos pueblos y en la posibilidad de la reconciliación, el joven se une a los terroristas que acosan el nuevo Estado de Israel. Con sus actos, convertirá al haj en un paria..

Leon Uris
Internationally acclaimed novelist Leon Uris ran away from home at age seventeen, a month after the attack on Pearl Harbor, to join the Marine Corps, and he served at Guadalcanal and Tarawa. His first novel, Battle Cry, was based on his own experiences in the Marines, which he revisited in his final novel, O'Hara's Choice. His other novels include the bestsellers Redemption, Trinity, Exodus, QB VII, and Topaz, among others. Leon Uris passed away in June 2003.
