    PREFACE

I hate stress. I hate the palpitations and the twitching that I get when I’m feeling anxious or worried. I hate the tiredness, the low energy, the memory loss, the rapid breathing, and the sleepless nights too. So I’ve made it my business to find healthy and God-honouring ways to keep stress and anxiety out of my life.

Eight million Britons suffer from anxiety, panic attacks or stress-related diseases; and it is costing the National Health Service over £10 billion a year. I know people who complain constantly of fatigue, pounding headaches, indigestion, shaky hands, rashes, frequent urination, and excessive sweating. None of it is good!

Thankfully, as the title of this book implies, there are several healthy and harmless things we can all do to reduce stress and anxiety in our lives. In the same token, there are also several unhealthy and ungodly things that people do to reduce stress that are downright dangerous. And, you need to avoid these like the plague.

For instance, I had a relative who believed that drinking his night away was a viable way to avoid his stressful life. Almost every evening after work (and on most weekends) he would go down to the local pub or diner - not to have dinner or to replenish his energy, but to get his daily fix of alcoholic beverages and spirits.

He would often stay out drinking till after midnight, before dragging himself home, as drunk as a skunk. Needless to say, his drinking problem ruined his reputation, bankrupted his business, destroyed his health, and shattered his relationships with family and friends.

That, for me qualifies as an unhealthy and ungodly way to try to reduce stress. It’s unhealthy because it devastates or destroys your health, and shortens your life. It’s ungodly because God is opposed to anything that hinders you from fulfilling His purpose for your life.

There are several other things people do to drown out their stress and anxiety that also fall under this ‘ungodly’ category. For instance, many people in our society have bought into the lie that they can get rid of their worries by using drugs, engaging multiple sexual partners, gossiping, over-eating, partying, impulse buying or spending more than they earn.

Others waste precious time doing nasty and unfruitful things: like cheating on their spouse, neglecting their children, destroying property, gambling away their money, stealing, rebelling, hurting their friends, or getting themselves fired from work.

Fortunately, you don’t have to go down the ungodly route. You don’t have to displease God, hurt the people you love, or mess up your life to get rid of stress. If you are a Christ-follower (and I hope you are), you don’t have the liberty to be reckless with your life, because it belongs to the One who gave His life for you. You don’t have to be hooked by anything, or enslaved by anyone, because Jesus Christ paid the ultimate price for your freedom.

So, in this book, I will attempt to show you 20 harmless, healthy, and godly ways to neutralise or eliminate stress from your life. If you take the time and effort to proactively internalise a few of the ideas you pick up in here, the results you get should more than compensate you for the time and money you invest in this book. Enjoy the journey!

    INTRODUCTION

Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers. (3 John 1:2.)

Human beings were not designed to carry tonnes of stress and anxiety. That’s why you need to do something drastic now if you are always feeling stressed. If you don’t, you will simply get sick, burn out and reduce your chances of excelling in life. In extreme cases, continuous stress and anxiety can even lead to stroke, paralysis, or untimely death.

Unfortunately, this happens to too many people in our society today; but it doesn’t have to be that way with you. As a person seeking to do things in ways that please God, you not only have several natural ways of dealing with stress, but you have plenty of spiritual resources too.

It is my intention in this simple and concise book on 20 harmless, healthy, and godly ways to neutralise or eliminate stress from your life, to furnish you with some super-easy ways of dealing with stress that should reduce the need to medicate excessively, or endanger your life.

Many of the suggestions in this book are common sense ideas, but they are also backed by scientific experiments and surveys carried out in reputable laboratories and health clinics all over the world.

As this book is not a scientific treatise, I will not be filling its pages with laborious details or proofs of many of the ideas I share. Many of them are already well established in other more scientific publications. You are, of course, welcome to compliment this reading with your own research where needed, before making any drastic lifestyle changes.

Since I have no official medical or mental health training, I offer you these 20 ideas and suggestions from the perspective of one who speaks to hundreds of people every month, and has been in fulltime Christian Ministry for over 15 years.

Many of the ideas here have helped me regulate and diminish the stresses I have to deal with in my roles as a Husband, a Father, the senior Minister of a growing Church, and a spiritual Leader in my Community. Other ideas have been picked up over the years from my experience as the principal of a Bible College, and from reading.

All I ask is that you choose half a dozen or so of these ideas that work for you and work them. I promise you that it won’t be long before you start to
