    It started with a fever.

    It lasted for three days, as these things always do, as would a cursed sleep in a fairytale. Dresden didn’t come home from work one evening, wouldn’t answer his phone, and when Paris called his office they said that he hadn’t made it in.

    Paris had seen all those cop shows; he knew the police wouldn’t go out and find a grown man, one who had been missing for all of an afternoon, just because his husband was worried. He picked their daughter up from daycare, he cooked a nice dinner. He tried to ignore the uneasy feeling that this was it, his restless man had finally left him alone with the baby and the mortgage. It’d happened to his cousin a few years back.

    It wasn’t until he entered the bedroom, a stack of folded laundry in his arms, that he found Dresden still in bed, curled up around a pillow.

    Paris stopped at the door. Their daughter, Madison, walked right into his legs and wrapped her arms around them. Honey? No answer. He rolled his eyes. I’m turning on the lights, he said, and did. Dresden flipped over and pulled the covers over his head.

    Oh, no, you don’t, Paris murmured. He put the laundry on the floor and crawled into bed, helping Madison up behind him. Paris put his hands on Dresden’s shoulder and rolled him over to face them. Say hi to your daughter. She hasn’t seen you all day.

    When he saw Dresden, he felt guilty for immediately assuming—not quite the worst. Dresden’s hair was soaked
