About this ebook

For personal reasons, I had a bias toward a Firefighter named Ashley Blaze, who joined our team.
Beautiful and determined, I did what I could to test her mettle.
She proved to be much more than what I expected.
My name is Adrian Downs, and this is our story.

I’ll be sad to see you go mate. I say, You sure you want to do this? Captain Max Reynolds adjusts his shoulder strap and hugs me with one arm. We stand on the driveway under the moonlit sky. There is a brisk chill in the air. Memories hit me of the time I have shared with Max.

I come back to work with the bloke, and now he bails on me. I take the reins as captain for the precinct he ran in the NSW fire station. I run my eye over the blonde who has also tendered her resignation. Rico told me she and he were an item. Max Reynolds is the best I’ve worked with. Well, was… I stroke my jaw, looking down at the source of his decision.

Max says, Adrian, I did my time. You should have fun training your new lieutenant.

    Eh?

I selected her myself Ashley Blaze."

The fuck? I said, A woman?

The blonde folds her arms and stiffens her upper lip. She chimes in, And is that a problem?

    It is, woman.

Both of them widen their eyes, I say. Max you should have left this to me. I can handle this.

Mate, she’s good. She was captain in one of the rural brigades. She’s been badgering us to join up here.

Great, someone green who fought fires with a garden hose in Timbuctoo. I say This is the big time. I can’t have her undermining the whole squad.

The blonde steps in my face. That’s rich from someone who pretty much got demoted here.

Fuck off! I never got demoted. I hiss, I got transferred.

The blonde is in my face, she says, Bullshit… I know all about you, you sexist pig I clamp my jaw while Max wedges himself in between us.

Mate relax. He turns to the blonde Rachel! Back off will ya. He chucks the keys to her and says, Wait for me in the car.

She turns, I say, Max, is it true you’re seeing her?

    I am.

I shake my head, You’ve gone all soft on me, mate. When I first met you, we were fucking superheroes. Like, how many lives did we save?

    A lot.

Don’t be modest. I say, Hundreds maybe thousands indirectly.

Those were good times. Back when I had the fire in the belly, driven by desire…

    You mean your late wife.

    Max flinches then swallows. Yes.

I’m glad you moved on, but her? I point. I notice she didn’t listen to Max, standing by the firetruck just within an earshot.

I love Rachel. She’s been through thick and thin but here, everything just fell into place. I started out fighting fires in retribution for my wife. Then I fell pretty hard for this woman. Made me realize.

I raise a brow to look at Rachel, shaking my head. She raises her hand and gives me the finger.

I think you fell on your head, I say.

Max laughs. He has this infectious growl that makes me crack up.

I say You sure you don’t want to reconsider? I’m happy she’s quit, but you? C’mon, don’t do this to me.

I’m done mate, my resignation is official with Chief Bully. Time for me to do other things.

I shake my head, Ok. I guess hopes of reforming the brotherhood are out the window, huh?

    Bully will still be here.

I pause, the image of Chief Jaco Bully comes to mind, barking orders to me as a cadet. How is that gray haired moustache wearing motherfucker?

"That motherfucker is doing just fine bra."

We both laugh at the booming voice; the South African accent with the machine gun pronunciation a dead ringer.

Shit. I squeeze my eyes and turn to the six foot five behemoth wearing a white shirt, black tie and matching pants. He puts his arm out and we shake. Hard. His biceps are straining. Mine are straining.

You’re muscles are getting smaller Bully… I say. The department got you fighting fires behind a computer too much. Max laughs. Bully’s eyes narrow as he applies more pressure, squeezing hard, his iron vice grip crushing my fingers. AH! I scream, Stop. Ok! Ok!

Bully folds his arms and laughs, You’re looking good Adrian. When your name came up on the radar, I just had to get your ass back here. I heard about all that bullshit in Perth. What’s the world coming to, eh?

Bully’s phone rings. He answers, puts his palm on it and says, Adrian, come up to my office when you’re done here. I want to talk to you about your new recruit.

    Yes, sir.

Bully looks at Max, and I get a sense of tension between them. I guess Max didn’t leave the brotherhood on a good note.

I exhale when I look at Rachel, then a red haired woman walks past with a gym bag. She looks about five eight with a slim, medium build. The lady has a bit of muscle on her, but in an aesthetically pleasing way. Oval shaped face with green eyes that sparkle like jewels. She stops two feet short of
