Hunt - H.H. Coonrad
Chapter 1
The dart hit the opposite wall with a resounding thud, causing a cheer to erupt through the air. The clacking of pool balls smacking together as a game of billiards ensued joined in with the many voices of the establishment, raised in laughter and light conversation. The lighting was dim, just bright enough that forms of beings could be made out, along with facial features of each inhabitant, though no brighter. Everyone had a drink in hand. It was cheery.
Kya was not in the best of moods as she leaned against a wall, one of her arms folding over her chest while the other firmly grasped her drink in her right hand, bringing it up to her lips and allowing the cool liquid to run down the back of her throat. Soda, as she had never been the biggest fan of alcohol, only enjoying it when she was stressed and needed a way to unwind from the burdens that seemed to constantly fall upon her shoulders. With a sigh, she pulled her leather jacket more firmly around her shoulders, keeping her gaze in constant motion between the dart game taking place in front of her, and the other members of her pack that flitted around the room in seemingly ignorant bliss.
In spite of the happy atmosphere, her chest felt tight with dread. It had been too long since any of them had received assignments, and she knew that their Director was going to be sending out new ones tonight to select agents. It was going to be soon. Very soon. And she couldn’t shake the feeling that more than one of her pack would be going on assignment, which meant that they would be in deep danger. Potentially losing their lives in the process.
A hazard of the job at hand, but one that she never took to kindly.
You are looking far too serious for this party, Kya.
A voice sounded to her right, but she didn’t bother looking. She already knew that her brother, Thomas, had decided to come and poke at her to either lighten her mood or piss her off. The odds were fairly even in what would actually happen. But where Thomas went that also meant--
It’s true, little sister. I get that you want to go make out with Markus, but if it’s that serious, why don’t you just take him home and have your way with him already?
Of course, where Thomas went, his brother John was sure to follow. John’s brown hair was messy and tousled, a striking contrast to Thomas’ dark blonde hair that he usually kept neatly brushed and tidy. John was the older brother, but you would never know by how the pair acted. The two were brothers by blood, but Kya had taken them as her brothers by choice.
Kya couldn’t keep the grin from spreading across her face, no matter how hard she tried, reaching over to slap John on the shoulder. Damn them and their goofy antics, always breaking her bad moods no matter how often she got into them, and no matter how badly she wanted to stay in them. I do not want to go make out with Markus! Can’t you two ever act your age? Even just once?
John looked horrified by the question, as if the very thought repulsed him, his blue-gray eyes dancing with mischief. I can’t even begin to imagine something so absurd! Act our age, you say? Preposterous!
Well, that would require an actual level of thinking on your part, so I suppose it is beyond you. My mistake.
Thomas barked a laugh and quickly drew Kya in for a bone crushing hug, causing her to laugh and gasp for breath while pushing against his chest to work at freeing herself. Thomas was much stronger than she, but was not the leader type. Otherwise, the job of Alpha that she had taken upon herself when she had formed this pack would likely fall to him, or perhaps Markus.
Without really thinking, Kya stole a quick glance at Markus again, but quickly had to look away as she saw him looking over at her and she didn’t miss the grin that spread across his face at her gaze. Before he could make his way over to her, though, her phone rang shrilly, earning the attention of every pack member in the bar. It was the ring of an email, and noticing the sender, her blood turned to ice.
An email from the Organization. From the Director. The message titled: Assignments.
Kya’s heart began to hammer within her chest, and she fought to keep her breathing normal. At the age of 23, this should be something that she would be good at, but it was never something that she had mastered, even in her couple of years of being a pack leader. She briefly wondered if any of the other pack leaders had this same problem. Perhaps not, and she was just an incompetent wannabe.
The sound of someone clearing their throat tore her from her thoughts. She looked up briefly, taking in the faces of each member of her pack before turning back to the email. The assignments were listed by rank, and she couldn’t keep the strain from her voice as she read off each name. Kya O’Connor and Markus Cross: Assigned to Dominik and Michelle Brooks, lead Vampires of the Western Coven - Code level: Red. Thomas and John Mitchell: Assigned to the Southern City pack - Code level: Red,
she took a deep breath, thinking about her brothers’ assignment. The Southern City pack was small but powerful. Both of them would have to work together to defeat them. Her blood had begun to boil as she
