EXCERPT
Joy’s hand accidentally grazed Derrick’s crotch, and she felt his straining hard-on. Although a bit embarrassed, she coyly asked, “What are you thinking about?”

“Oh, just Bessie,” Derrick replied in his thickest southern drawl, “My favorite cow back home.”

Their laughter defused the awkward moment as Derrick leaned over and kissed Joy with some urgency.

Joy grabbed and squeezed Derrick’s excitement and said, “Save this for tomorrow, okay?”

“Not sure I can... or that I want to,” Derrick replied with a devilish smile.

Joy just looked at the man she had fallen so completely in love with and considered how lucky she had been to meet him. For just a second, she thought about Brian. It had been the first time in a long time that she had thought of him.

How and why she had ever believed he was what she deserved, she couldn’t begin to fathom when here next to her sat someone that respected, cherished, desired, protected and wanted her. Brian simply took from her. This man gave.

Suddenly, an old Dave Mason song popped into her head, You shouldn’t have took more than you gave, sounded in her brain and she laughed out loud.

“Now, my turn. What are you thinking about?”

“Bessie,” Joy answered. “I hope she likes me.”

    Chapter One

JOE HAD SETTLED into a routine. He had only gone back to Big Pine to collect some of his things and was pretty much staying at the little efficiency. The kid was still getting what he wanted; Joe still didn't mind paying the rent after a few drinks and a hit or two of a joint. Even though he had stopped pretending to be asleep, he still wouldn't participate. During the day before going to work, he would go to the Publix where Julie worked to see her.

Even though she genuinely seemed happy to see him, after a few days she had told Joe that she would get in trouble with the boss if he continued to hang around. She told Joe that she really needed the job and if he really wanted to be friends, he would have to stop coming to the store. Joe agreed on one condition, if Julie would go out on a real date with him.

Julie blushed a deep crimson. She had never actually been asked out on a date before, and she did kinda like this big guy. He kind of scared her a little bit, too. She said, Okay, and they made a plan.

A week from Saturday, she would not go home after work and they would go watch the sunset at Mallory Square. She had always heard a lot of things about the sunset at Mallory Square, but in her whole life on the Keys had never seen it. She would tell her parents that she had somehow missed her bus and made Joe promise that she wouldn't miss the last bus home. Joe agreed and had planned to take off that Saturday from his job at Cowboy Bill's just to be sure. He left the store with them both excited and a little nervous about their date.

Several nights later after work, Joe said to his new roommate that he was going to take a
