Prelude to Darkness - Lorraine Kennedy

    Chapter One

    Hailey

EVEN NOW, WHEN I REMEMBER the first time I looked into his eyes - that first instant that he drew me into his world of darkness, I still experience the same exhilaration and dread as I did then.

    Would I do it again?

    Yes!

He is the very essence of darkness, but at the same time he is my light. Nothing can compare to how he makes me feel, but it wasn’t always that way.

His is a world of darkness. It is the world of the immortal, but that is just the beginning. It is also a world of wolves and so many things that do not exist in the world of light.

It is a world of eternal night and the endless search for the light. It is a reality that can only be seen with eyes that see all shades of darkness.

This is my story. It is the story of a love that conquers time, distance and even death, but it isn’t just my story. This story belongs to all who seek the light within the darkness. We are the Light Seekers.

For me, it began on a cold autumn night.

That is one of the things that I remember most about the night my eyes were opened to that world of darkness.

But I also remember feeling his essence and the complete absence of light in his soul.

    I WAS BEING FOLLOWED.

It felt as if thousands of spiders were crawling over my skin. It always happened that way. I would get that crawly feeling and look up to see a stranger’s eyes on me.

Stopping in mid-stride, I scanned the dark street, looking for anyone who seemed out of place - anyone who could be the watcher.

There was no one. Still, I knew that somewhere in the shadows, a pair of eyes was following my every move.

I walked a little faster but remained alert. Tonight, I’d need to bed down in a more populated area.

A storm was brewing on the Pacific and this time of year that could mean a cold night.

There was always the Boardwalk. At least there I might find an open building to take shelter in or maybe a bridge to sleep under. It wouldn’t be much in the way of shelter, but at least I might be able to have a fire.

    Chapter Two

    Sean

I WATCHED HER FROM the shadows as I struggled to control the hunger. Even from a distance, the scent of her blood was maddening.

Closing my eyes, I concentrated on the sound of her heart beating and the life essence rushing through her veins. It was enough to send my senses reeling.

As I watched, that all too familiar hunger ravaged my soul - taking control of every cell in my body until I could think of nothing but her blood.

There was something different about her scent - something almost magical.

With sheer willpower, I ignored the burning hunger and focused on the girl.

I’d picked up her scent the night before. Spurred on by hunger, I followed her through the city, waiting and watching for the opportune moment to sate the hunger ripping at my insides.

    But that moment hadn’t come.

There had been others close by. They were people like her - lost souls seeking warmth and shelter from the elements.

Tonight was different. Tonight she was alone.

As I watched her, the hunger continued clawing at me - tearing me apart from the inside out.

    Still I waited.

It wasn’t just her blood that was different. This human was beautiful in a way that belonged only to the vampire.

    But how was that possible?

    She wasn’t vampire.

I sensed the life seeping from the very pores of her skin.

Her golden blond hair was like the sun, but it was her eyes that enchanted me most. The girl’s eyes reminded me of the clear summer skies of my childhood.

    My childhood.

It had been centuries since I’d thought about the time before I turned. When the memories did wiggle their way into my thoughts, I was always surprised that so much time had passed.

Time had little meaning for the immortal. From the moment that I was born into darkness, all that existed was the night and the hunger.

It was that hunger that brought me back from those long ago memories of blue skies and sunshine. It was the hunger that at that very moment burned through the very fiber of my being.

I knew that if I didn’t feed soon, my mind would begin to slip. Blood deprivation would drive an immortal mad.

But it wouldn’t be long now. The girl was close.

The poor creature shivered from the cold. Even from a distance, I could hear her teeth chattering.

She had no chance at all. If her blood didn’t call to every vampire close enough to pick up her scent, her misery would surely be a beacon to the immortals of the city.

    Why not end her misery?

If I didn’t, another vampire would.

Moving closer, I took cover behind a pile of crumbling brick.

Although I was careful not to be seen, it was more out of habit than necessity. Even if my prey were watching,
