Chapter One
The Beginning of the War
The War of 1812 doesn’t begin in 1812, or even in the 1800s.
The end of the 18th century was a politically troubled time. The era that began with the Seven Years War in 1755 wouldn’t begin to culminate until the century turned, and wouldn’t come to a close until 1815, when the War of 1812 finally ended.
With the might of the English, French and Spanish navies, conflicts became more global as further battlefields came within reach. The Seven Years war, also called The French and Indian Wars in America, The War of Conquest in Canada, The Pomeranian War in Sweden, the Third Carnatic War on the Indian sub-continent, and the Third Silesian war in Austria, was the first truly global war, and many consider it to be a precursor to World War One.
The war began on the American continent when Britain attacked French positions and seized hundreds of French merchant ships in the disputed territories of New France. Prussia then invaded Saxony, pulling in their English and Austrian allies into the conflict. Many of the middle and smaller powers attempted to stay clear of war, and by the time of the Treaty of Paris and the Treaty of Hubertusburg, which effectively ended the war in 1763, the balance of power in Europe had shifted significantly.
Great Britain came through the war gaining large territories in North America, the West Indies, and the West African coast, and regulated trade in India. France found itself saddled with a heavy war debt, and lost most of her colonies.
Right on the heels of that conflict the American Revolution proved something unprecedented — that a remote colony could overthrow a superpower and declare itself its own sovereign state. Even more drastic was that the colony, now an independent country, had no monarchy. A freely-elected political system had overthrown a monarchy rooted in centuries of tradition.
Burdened with the heavy debt of war, the people of France entered a time of economic depression and hardship. There were many complicated reasons for the French Revolution of 1792, but the excesses of the aristocracy and the clergy while the country was experiencing bad harvests and crushing debts lay heavily on the general populace. This led to a feeling of unrest, and ultimately revolt.
The traditional position of the Roman-Catholic church was absolute monarchy by divine decree, meaning the king has absolute power by the will of God, and that God gives
