Collapsing Worlds - ML Steele
I.
There was a crispness to the air that night, as she moved through the shadows of the ruined city, passing by lighted areas in search of shelter from what was coming. The bone chilling wind cut through the thick winter clothing she wore. Finally, she found an opening large enough to fit inside, yet small enough to protect her, between two dilapidated buildings. The few remaining lights that were dimly lit in the desolate city, began to burst as whatever was upon her grew closer and closer. No other inhabitants of the city remained, they had all fled days before. She gripped tight to an old pipe anchored into the cement nearby. Placed as if it were a handle to grip onto.
Sand began to pelt the young female’s eyes, the only part of her not covered. As she tucked her face into her sleeve, both for protection and to hide from this thing that was bearing down on her. She kicked herself mentally for having left her eye covers in her vehicle. The young woman held on for dear life, as it hit. The force of which could only be compared to a tornado, sucked and spit everything in its path. However, as fast as it arrived, it departed. Her eyes never seeing what had made such an uproar, but she knew what it was……The Reaper.
As the young female began to move, she realized almost all of her life force had been drained by the Reaper. She quickly reached in the bag which hung at her side, and retrieved a vial. She placed it near her nose and inhaled deeply. Immediately, she could feel her strength returning as the pungent scent filled her nostrils. Within a few minutes she felt fully regenerated and got to her feet. She began moving quickly in the direction the ship, The Reaper, had arrived. The path of destruction was astonishing. All vegetation had been drained of life, carcasses of once living creatures littered the whole mountain side. She moved on further, increasing the speed at which she traveled. The young woman needed to find shelter quickly, and get as far away from The Reaper as she possibly could before the darkness set in. For she knew once that occurred, the beasts would descend from their dens to search for sustenance. Carcasses of dead creatures would not satisfy these beasts. They craved the life force which ran through her body.
The young woman scanned the area ahead of her, and discovered a cave in the side of the mountain. Only a small opening presented itself, with many rocks piled nearby. She could easily hide herself in there, until the darkness passed, and the beasts retreated to their dark holes. As she made her way to the opening, the sky grew darker and angrier, the temperature continued to plummet. The young woman reached the entrance to the cave, and immediately began assessing what had to be done to stay safe. She retrieved a searcher from the bag, slung across her side. She flipped a switch, and threw it into the cavernous area that lay in front of her.
