"Dance Pe Chance" is a hilarious play in Bengali. Kakoli and her reluctant husband Ashok prepare to join the dance competition to be judged by the famous Bollywood matinee idol Mithun-da. Their arch rivals, Satyaki and his reluctant wife Kheyali also try to gear up for the grand show. Mantu arrives to lend them a helping hand. What happens next is a laugh riot that sends the audience rolling down the aisles.
The play has been staged several times around the country and has received rave reviews. The approximate duration of this family-friendly play is sixty minutes with five (5) male characters and two (2) female characters.
Sudipta Bhawmik
Sudipta Bhawmik is an award winning playwright, actor and director and has written several plays in Bengali and English. Sudipta’s plays tell the stories of the struggles and contradictions of first generation Bengali immigrants, and of their children and their divided loyalties and this has been his unique contribution to Bengali Theater. This has inspired several theater scholars to cite his plays in their scholarly work about diasporic theater. His plays have been produced and staged in USA, UK, Bangladesh and Calcutta, India, and have been translated and produced in several Indian languages like Hindi, Marathi and English. His plays have won several awards at different festivals in India as well as in USA and Canada. Major theater journals in India publish his plays and he has three books to his credit. Sudipta is a member of the Dramatist Guild of America.

(অশোক ও কাকলীর বাড়ির ফ্যামিলি রুম। বুম বক্সে উচ্চগ্রামে হিন্দি গান বাজছে – লেফট লেগ আগে আগে, রাইট লেগ পিছে পিছে। অশোক আপ্রাণ চেষ্টা করছে গানের সঙ্গে নাচার – কাকলী শেখাবার চেষ্টা করছে। অশোক কিছুতেই নাচ বাগে আনতে পারছে না। ঘেমে নেয়ে একশা। )
কাকলী
(গান থামিয়ে)
কি আশ্চর্য? এই সামান্য নাচটা তুলতে পারছ না? প্রত্যেকটা স্টেপ তো গানেই বলে দিয়েছে। গানের কথা গুলো একটু মন দিয়ে শুনতে পারছ না।
অশোক
শুনতে পারব না কেন? আমি কি কালা নাকি? তুমি জানো না, আমি হিন্দি ভাল বুঝিনা?
কাকলী
এটা কি এমন কঠিন হিন্দি কথা? লেফট লেগ কি হিন্দি কথা? রাইট লেগ হিন্দি কথা?
অশোক
আর অন্য কথা গুলো? সেগুলো কি হিন্দি নয়?
কাকলী
আগে আগে – এটা বুঝতেও তোমার কষ্ট হচ্ছে? অগ্রে অগ্রে বললে তবে বুঝবে? আর পিছে পিছে, সেটার জন্য কি বলতে হবে? পশ্চাতে পশ্চাতে?
অশোক
ওই গানের মধ্যে ওরকম হুড়মুড় করে, হাজারটা বাজনার সঙ্গে - অত ডিটেলসে সব বোঝা যায় নাকি?
কাকলী
ঠিক আছে আমি গাইছি, তুমি নাচো! ওঠো!
অশোক
নাঃ, আজ আর পারছি না। আজ ছেড়ে দাও।
কাকলী
না ছাড়ব না। তোমাকে উঠতেই হবে। হাতে মাত্র দুই সপ্তাহ সময়। এর মধ্যে তোমাকে তৈরি হতে হবে। এই কম্পিটিশন আমাকে জিততেই হবে।
অশোক
কেন? তোমায় জিততেই হবে কেন? কে তোমায় মাথার দিব্যি দিয়েছে?
কাকলী
কেন জিততে হবে জানো না? এই ডান্স কম্পিটিশনের আইডিয়াটা কে দিয়েছিল? আমি! সেবার এ জি এম-এ বললাম প্রতি বছর ওই এক শ্যামা শাপমোচন না করে অন্য কিছু করা যায় না? টিভিতে কি সব দারুণ দারুণ রিয়ালিটি ড্যান্স কম্পিটিশন হয়। সেরকম কিছু করতে পারেন তো! শুনে মানসী ঠাট্টা করে বলল, কাকলীদি, ড্যান্স কম্পিটিশন হলে চ্যাম্পিয়ন তো তুমিই হবে! আর সবার কি হাসি। আমি সেই দিনই ঠিক করেছিলাম ওদের দেখিয়ে দেব আমি কি জিনিস। গুরু থাঙ্কমুনি কুট্টির ছাত্রী আমি, জীবনে কম প্রাইজ পাইনি। এই বুড়ো হাড়ে আমি যে আজও ভেল্কি দেখাতে পারি, সেটা ওদের বুঝিয়ে দেব।
অশোক
তা দেখাও না ভেল্কি, কে বারণ করেছে। আমাকে নিয়ে টানাটানি করছ কেন?
কাকলী
তা কি করব? তোমাদের কমিটি যে সিংগলস না করে কাপলস কন্টেসট করে দিল? জোড়ে জোড়ে নাচতে হবে। আসলে এটাও ওদের একটা চাল, বুঝেছ? ওরা জানে, সিংগলস কনটেস্ট হলে আমাকে হারাতে ওরা কোনদিনও পারবে না। তাই তোমাকে আমার ঘাড়ে চাপিয়ে আমাকে মারতে চাইছে।
অশোক
ছি ছি, এসব কি কথা? আমি না তোমার স্বামী?
কাকলী
স্বামী হয়েই ত যত ঝামেলা পাকিয়েছ! তোমাকেই পার্টনার নিতে হবে। উফ, তোমার কালচারাল সাইডটা এত উইক জানলে তোমায় বিয়েই করতাম না। সামান্য দুটো নাচের স্টেপ ফেলতে পারছ না?
