About the Book
INTRODUCTION
Years after my birth, I sought ways to express myself. My introverted nature and laziness with the pen drove me miles searching, for a suitable means of communicating with the world. Fortunately, I found love in word sketch (poetry) and God added others.
SKETCHINGS OF A LAY is a collection of various ideas, thoughts, feelings, inspirations, comments, etc., of mine; at different times and occasions. I have been asked, why use LAY
instead of another word? The answer is obvious; I truly did not know much about poetry, especially when I did most of the sketchings. My love for the sciences and zeal for engineering blinded me poetically, but the gift was in me, though dormant for a time. As I grew older and wiser about my life and destiny through education and experience, I couldn’t hide my Moses anymore so I let him out. About three years later, I harvested what is now in your hands. Though I didn’t see me publishing the sketchings in the beginning, but did paint them just as a means of self-expression.
I learned this form of writing from church hymns. Funny! Isn’t it? But it is the truth. I didn’t have any means to poetry materials when I started, but found the pattern of writing hymns exciting, so I adopted it and flavoured it my way. After writing about twenty or more, people started calling me a poet to my amazement; because I didn’t know how I so qualify, I only was glad the world was hearing me. Then, decided to know what poetry is all about and adopted a personal style of writing mine.
This collection is divided into nine chapters. Chapter one: Personal
, is about issue about myself, the writer. Chapter two: Thoughts, Critic
expresses some of my thoughts and criticisms on certain issues. Chapter three: Sermons and Admonitions
contains encouragement to different kind of people facing difficult situations and teachings. Chapter four: Prayers, Pleas, Cries
expresses yearnings, displeasures and prayers to God concerning issues of life. Chapter five: Comments, Remarks, Letters
talks about various comments on issues and letters that were written to people. Chapter six: Love, Friendship
contains love poems and comments on love. Chapter seven: Friends, People
contains writings about people and some friends of mine. And Chapter eight: Motherland, Fatherland
is about issues in Nigeria and Africa.
In this work I have strained myself more than when writing them, to arrange the Sketchings into topics- it’s my job anyway. And though not perfectly done, - no human work ever is- as I still critic like many would, the inclusion of certain Sketchings under a heading. Just as said in one of the sketch;
Many times paintings
Of mine look weird
From strokes to lines
Language to structure.
Many times paintings
Of mine look distorted
From concept to style
Introductions to conclusions.
It is this weirdness and distorted look that confuses one placing into various headings, as some seem to fit in more than one heading, but I deliberately forced some into where they are. But I believe you will enjoy reading and contemplating on these
