After 19 years as a police officer, I retired just to turn around and work another job for 9 more years. At the age of 61, I decided it was time to retire...again. Somewhere along he way, I realized I could tap into my imagination and share my stories with others. It took me a while to get the nerve to publish my book, but with the help of family and friends, I bit the bullet and pursued my dreams. This is my first endeavor as an author.

    Hold On To Your Faith - A.B. Murphy

    Put your hands together and give a round of applause for Cassie Monroe.

    The roar of the crowd was the only thing that could motivate me to step out onto the stage tonight. Thank goodness, I only had two songs to sing. After finishing the first song, I nodded for Rusty to go right into the next number. Thankfully, I made it through that one also. I blew kisses and waved to the audience, showing them how much I appreciated their applause and cheers.

    As I turned to walk off the stage, a wave of nausea and dizziness hit me. I tried to find something to hold on to, but there wasn’t anything but microphone stands. Rusty came up to me and took my arm, trying to lead me off stage, but my legs wouldn’t work and I could feel myself falling. I managed to look up and I saw Ben running toward me, catching me before I hit the floor.

    Please Ben, I need to get some air. He carried me backstage where someone was handed me a bottle of water. Before I could take a sip, everything went black.

    ~~~~~~
    By the time we reached the car, the cool air had brought me back from the darkness. Ben got in the back seat with me and Jon drove our car, with Sandy following in theirs.
    Ben, can we go to the condo for tonight instead of going home? I really need to lie down. He wrapped me up in a blanket we keep in the car for the kids and held me close.
    We are going to the emergency room to get you checked out. If everything’s ok, we will go to the condo. I tried to sit up, but I didn’t have the strength.
    I’m just worn out, Ben. Please, take me home.
    As soon as we get a doctor to examine you, we’ll discuss it. Ben was generally an easy going guy. But, when it came to his family, he was protective, stubborn, and unmovable.
    OK sweetheart, we’re here. Jon is going inside to get a wheelchair. That really flew all over me.
    Dang it Ben, I’m not an invalid. I can walk in. Of course that went in one ear and straight out of the other. The door opened and Jon was there with a nurse from the ER pushing the chair.
    Because the waiting room was crowded and I was well known in Nashville, they decided to take me through the ambulance entrance. As they transferred me to a bed, I became sick at my stomach, needing to throw up.
    Mrs. Collins, have you eaten anything today? One nurse was taking my vitals, while another was starting an I.V.
    I can’t remember. Maybe some toast. I haven’t felt good all day. As soon as she finished, a lab technician came in and took some blood. Once again, I had to throw up, but I didn’t have much in my stomach to lose. Ben was standing in the corner watching me with a worried look on his face.
    Honey, did you call home about the kids? He came closer to the bed. Jon is calling them now. My Mom and Dad were watching our three kids, along with Jon and Sandy’s little boy, Brandon. He was two years old and got along wonderfully with our three kids.
    Sara Alice, who is eight and Mattie Rose, six, loved mothering Brandon and their little brother, Kane Alexander, who just turned three. There was never a dull moment when we were all together. And when you added Myra and Travis’ children, it was pure chaos! Their son, Aaron is five and their daughter, Kelly is eighteen months old. Our house was constantly filled with laughter and love.
    Finally, the doctor came in, followed by Jon and Sandy. Mrs. Collins, my name is Dr. Wright. What seems to be going on? He pulled up a chair and sat down by the bed.
    I’m not sure Doctor. I’ve not been feeling well. I stayed in bed most of the day, but I had to get up to go perform tonight. He looked at my chart, then laid it down on the end of the bed. Using his stethoscope in his ears, he leaned in to listen to my heart.
    Mrs. Collins … I interrupted him. Please call me Cassie. He nodded his head and continued. Cassie, you’re severely dehydrated. We’re going to keep you for the night so we can monitor you and continue the fluids through your I.V. I started to argue with him, but Ben stepped up and spoke before I could get my words out.
    If that’s what you feel is best, Doctor, then she’ll do it. Ben looked down at me and took my hand. Honey, this will give you some time to rest. I’ll be here with you the whole time.
    Dr. Wright headed for the door and then turned back. We’ll be doing more blood work throughout the night. Hopefully, we’ll have the results by morning. We’ve contacted Dr. Fields and he’ll be in to see you bright and early.
    Once they got me settled in my room, the nurse came in and gave me something to calm my stomach, which also made me sleepy. Ben asked them to bring in a recliner, so he would be close if I needed him. I fell asleep before they had a chance to bring it in.
    Chapter 2
    Cassie! Wake up! It’s talking time!!! I opened my eyes and Alice was almost nose to nose with me. She backed up and found the controls on the side rails, raising me up a little.
    Hey Alice. How did you know I was in the hospital? She put the rails down and sat on the bed next to me.
    Are you kidding me? I have snitches everywhere. I would have been here sooner but I had to wait until you went to sleep. I really need to ask Father if we can find an easier method for us to talk.
    I haven’t seen you for a while, Alice. You had me worried? Is everything OK? She looked at me and I saw regret in her eyes.
    I’m sorry, Cassie. I’ve been really busy. I should have come sooner. I grabbed her hand, squeezing it tightly.
    Don’t be sorry. As long as you’re all right, that’s all that matters. What’s kept you so busy? Excitement replaced the regret in her eyes.
    Oh Cassie, you will not believe what I’ve been up to. I can’t even believe it. Before she continued, I stopped her. Hold that thought, Alice. Do you by any chance know where Ben is?
    Oh, yeah … he told the nurses he was going to the condo to shower and change clothes. I think he was going to eat before coming back. They offered to get him a tray of food, but he turned them down. He’ll be back in about thirty minutes.
    I pulled the covers over my arms and turned my attention back to Alice. OK, go ahead with what you were telling me. She grinned really big and went back to her story.
    Well, I started thinking about how great it is with Father and all the others in Heaven. Everyone is so full of love for each other. And the acceptance there is off the charts. I never had that here, except with Sara and her family. And even though I’m totally happy, I thought we could be even happier!
    I had never seen Alice so bubbly and excited. I was anxious to hear more.
    So, I went to Father and talked him into a few things. We now have bowling alleys, swimming pools, and Karaoke parties in Heaven. I have even talked Father into bowling with us. Of course, He always bowls a perfect game. But then again, we all do. The best thing is we are doing it as one big family. She paused for a moment, deep in thought.
    Cassie, when we do Karaoke, we sing praises to Father. Sometimes, we sing solo. Sometimes we sing all together. And it’s beautiful. He listens to us with His eyes closed. Sometimes, we hear Him humming along. When we’re finished, He always stands up and claps the loudest. We make Him smile, Cassie. A tear rolls down my cheek as I watch the emotions come to life on Alice’s face. Then, her sweet smile was replaced with a mischievous grin.
    And of course, I’ll belt out a Bon Jovi song every once in a while just to make Him laugh out loud! I start giggling, which gets Alice giggling, finally turning into a full belly laugh for both of us. We finally got control of ourselves and remained silent for a few minutes, trying to catch our breath. All at once, Alice’s mood changes and she becomes serious.
    Cassie, I need you to listen to me. I can’t give you specifics, but I can tell you some things are about to happen in your life very soon.
    What is it? What’s gonna happen? Alice walked to the end of the bed.
    Cassie, you know how this works. You Know WHO, will not let me tell you everything. But I can tell you this. Hold on to your faith. Remember that always. It’s all going to be ok, but you must have faith. Let your family help you and rely on them. Oh, and call Sara. Ask her to come to Nashville. Let her be a part of this!
    I reached out for her and she quickly grabbed my hand. Alice, I’m scared. I’m not sure what I’m scared of, but I am
    I know, Cassie. But remember what I said. HOLD ON TO YOUR FAITH. Once again, I was alone. Then, I heard Alice’s voice as clear as if she were standing right beside me.
    Remember, Cassie!
    Chapter 3
    Wake up, sleepy head! Breakfast is ready. I slowly opened my eyes to see Ben setting a tray on my table. He reached over and adjusted my bed to make it easier for me to sit up.
    When I heard you talking, I thought I was at home and this was all a bad dream. He took the lid off my plate,
