Oh Boy, Mallory - Laurie Friedman
The Sleepover
SATURDAY MORNING, IN THE CAR WITH MOM ON THE WAY HOME FROM THE MALL
Dear Diary,
I’m not actually writing this in the car on the way home from the mall (I’m actually already at home on my bed with Cheeseburger), but if I had written it in the car (which I wouldn’t have done anyway because writing in the car always makes me sick), here’s what I would have written:
Dear Diary,
I just got you at the mall. I know. That doesn’t seem like the first thing you’d write about in a brand new diary. But here’s something that is worth writing about: when Mom picked me up from the sleepover at April’s house and I asked her if we could stop at the mall on the way home so I could buy a diary, she just said OK and did it.
I couldn’t believe it.
She didn’t ask any annoying mom sort of questions like: Why do you need a diary? Did something happen? Is there something you want to talk to me about? She didn’t even say, Can’t you wait until we get home and just order one online?
Nope. She didn’t do any of the above.
She just said OK, pulled into the mall parking lot, went with me into the department store, and waited while I picked you out, which took a while because there were a lot of diaries to pick from. I wanted a purple one because I love purple, but the purple ones had red stripes on them and I hate red so I got a yellow one with pink hearts on it, which was fine because I like yellow and pink. Then Mom drove me home and didn’t say a word except for, Mallory, please clean up your desk, and don’t forget to change Cheeseburger’s litter box.
The moral of the story: sometimes parents can surprise you, but not as much as friends. K.R.A.U.W.C.W.I.M. (That’s short for Keep Reading and U Will C What I Mean.)
XOXO, Mallory
P.S. In case you’re wondering what’s up with the X’s and O’s, X=kisses, O=hugs, and it’s how I sign all my letters (except ones I write to Max).
STILL SATURDAY, STILL ON MY BED, BUT HAVE ALREADY CLEANED UP MY DESK, CHANGED CHEESEBURGER’S LITTER BOX, EATEN A PEANUT BUTTER AND MARSHMALLOW SANDWICH, PAINTED MY TOENAILS, AND LOCKED MY DOOR SO MAX CAN’T COME IN AND TRY TO READ WHAT I’M WRITING
Dear Diary,
I have MEGA-BIG NEWS. It’s also MEGATOP-SECRET NEWS!
A boy likes me.
You read it right, but just in case you blinked or couldn’t believe what you read, I’ll write it again.
A boy likes me.
At least, I think a boy likes me. Actually, I’m not really sure a boy likes me. All I know is that someone told me that a boy likes me.
The boy’s name is Jake, and he’s in fifth grade, and the someone who told me he likes me is Arielle. Actually, she didn’t tell just me. She told Danielle (who I think already knew because Arielle and Danielle are best friends and tell each other everything) and Mary Ann and April and me. She told us all last night at a sleepover at her house, which I was kind of surprised I was invited to but now I know why. She had something she wanted to say, and she is the kind of person who likes saying something when she knows everyone will be excited to hear it.
Seriously, when she said it, all my friends started jumping up and down and screaming like she’d just announced the winner of a beauty pageant. Then they all started hugging me like I was the winner.
Mallory, it’s so cool that a boy likes you!
screamed April.
Mallory, it’s so cool that a super cute boy likes you!
screamed Arielle.
Mallory, it’s so cool that a super cute boy in fifth grade likes you!
screamed Danielle.
Mallory, say something!
screamed Mary Ann.
But I
