    Chapter One

Thia stared up at the vast, winged lion. The bustle of the museum moved around her, the wet smell of umbrellas and rain-soaked people mixing with the dry warm scent of the stone statue she stood before. The lamassu’s impassive gaze was endless and she let its silent calm sink into her flesh.

    He always drew her.

Urged by her company to leave the dull conference early and with time to kill, she found herself in the British Museum. It was only one tube stop from King’s Cross and her train home. And she could never resist him.

The lamassu was carved almost three thousand years before and the detail of the stonework amazed her.

Maybe it was his implacable calm. She wanted that. To draw it into herself as the ancient Assyrians had drawn in the power of animals such as this blend of lion, eagle and man towering over her.

That power was clear and sure. Honest. A reluctant smile tugged at her mouth. Her own honesty got her an early train home.

She had no say over the connection between her brain and her tongue. It was a constant failing, seemingly coded into her DNA. Usually she could shrug it off, tell herself it didn’t matter. But today, her unfailing honesty had probably lost her her job.

    Another one.

Maybe that was what pulled her to him as well. His silence. The knowledge that he wouldn’t say something completely inappropriate about a client’s wandering hands. It was an irony that she could hardly keep her hands to herself when she stood before the statue.

And there was another reason for her…obsession. All that awaited her at home was her tiny studio flat and nothing else. He promised desert wind, lush gardens, a velvet night filled with stars…

Thia almost laughed at herself. Her imagination was running away with her. But it was worse than that. He’d started to fill her dreams too. Innocent at first. Touches of her standing before him in
