    Michael watched from the cliff as the young man spoke with the hunter. He crouched on all fours, low to the ground, his snout wriggling occasionally in the air, monitoring the scents that clung to the slow breeze flowing past him. He hadn’t seen any other hunters in this area, but he knew he could never be too careful. His clan, which gathered from various territories when notified of the presence of hunters, depended on his expertise and guidance. He, more than all the bears, knew what happened when the leader wasn’t careful enough. Michael scowled at the thought, remembering his fathers, now long dead, killed by a band of hunters. The leader should have known about that band. He should have warned Michael’s parents, but he had been too busy hunting down one of his own who had dared to run away to a human settlement.
