    More than a Granny 2 US Version - Shelley Husband

    Hello there. I’m Shelley and I love designing crochet squares. I really do. In 2014, I published my first ebook called More than a Granny. It had 20 x 6" crochet square patterns from the easy to the complex. The aim of the ebook was to get folks creating more than traditional granny squares. Well since then, I have not stopped designing and so I have written this follow-up ebook.

    In this second More than a Granny ebook you’ll find 20 more patterns to interest and challenge you. This time, charts for each pattern are included. Charts are so good for checking if you’re doing the right thing in the right place. Some charts are best used in conjunction with the written pattern, particularly when there are instructions to work into previously completed rounds. I’ve noted which patterns this applies to.

    Most blocks are suitable for all skill levels and some provide a challenge! There are some interesting techniques and different ways of doing things that may at first glance seem challenging. If you take your time and work step by step you will be able to make any pattern in this book. I promise.

    Because I want you to be able make every pattern the best it possibly can be, I’ve included my hints and tips for seamless crochet to make it very hard to see where rounds begin and end, as well as an extensive stitch dictionary with links to videos I’ve made so you can see exactly what stitch is what. Plus, every round of every pattern has a stitch count so you can make sure you are on track easily.

    Navigating this ebook

    You’ll find lots of ways to move quickly through this ebook. There’s a page with thumbnail pictures of each pattern you can click on to go directly to that pattern. Each pattern has a link to the Stitch Dictionary, Chart for that pattern plus a link back to the Contents page.

    You will need…

    I used 8 ply (light worsted or DK) cotton yarn and a 4.5 or 5 mm crochet hook to create these patterns. I have noted those that I used a 4.5 mm hook. Of course, you can use any yarn fibre and thickness you like along with any hook size you like. You’ll find the specific yarns and colours I used in the samples listed at the end of the ebook. The yardage noted in each pattern is for Cascade Ultra Pima Cotton. This may differ if you use a different yarn.

    All my blocks measure 6". Yours may turn out smaller or larger, depending on your individual crochet style and hook and yarn combination. If size is an issue for you, simply move up or down a hook size or 2, depending on what you need. If size doesn't matter and you’re using just my patterns, then simply use the same hook and yarn throughout and everything will be just fine.

    If you’re planning on mixing these patterns with patterns by other designers, I’ve included my version of the traditional granny square, Grandma, as a gauge pattern. Hook it up and compare your size. If it’s bigger than 6", go down a hook size or 2. If it’s too small, go up a hook size or 2 and use that as your standard for these blocks.

    Hints and Tips

    How to Read My Patterns

    If this is the first time you’re making squares using my patterns, here’s how they work. This is the first 2 rounds from the written pattern for a traditional granny square, made my way :

    Round 1

    ch 3 (st ch), 2 dc, *ch 2, 3 dc*, repeat from * to * twice, ch 1, join with sc to 3rd ch of st ch.

    {3 sts along each side and 4 x 2 ch sps}

    Round 2

    ch 3 (st ch), 2 dc over joining sc, *ch 1**, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in 2 ch sp*, repeat from * to * twice and from * to ** once, 3 dc in same sp as first sts, ch 1, join with sc to 3rd ch of st ch.

    {6 sts & 1 x 1 ch sp along each side and 4 x 2 ch corner sps}

    At the start, I will tell you how to begin the round, then you’ll see an asterisk. This * indicates the beginning of a repeat. Ignore it for now and keep working along until you get to the words repeat from…. That is your cue to go back to the first * and repeat as instructed. After the repeats are done, then I will instruct you to finish off the round.

    The instructions between * and ** equal one side only. The instructions between ** and * equal one corner. So that means the instructions between * and * equal one side and the following corner.

    The words and numbers in the curly brackets { } are the stitch count for the round. Check this every now and then to make sure you’re on track.

    Seamless Crochet Tips

    I'm a bit pedantic about seamless crochet. I really don't like seeing where rounds begin and end. So here are my tips for avoiding that visible seam.

    Starting Chains

    The ch 3 starting chains count as the first stitch of your rounds. When starting a round with a single crochet,
