Chapter 1

The Announcement
Shh, I’m trying to hear.
It was midday and the crowd had assembled in the middle of the square. It was an exciting event at Ebanda Park. While pushing through, Iru had crammed himself amongst a group of boys. One boy had scratched himself against the fence and was cursing at his pain. Iru was getting restless trying to hear the announcement.
We’re going to get a skateboard park. They owe us that.
You think that they give a damn about us?
Who cares what they do, we can make our own skateboard park.
Shh.
Iru wanted them to shut up. He could care less about skateboarding. One boy punched him. Iru pushed on pass the boys, nearly tripping.
The king stood close to the microphone examining the crowd. He was advised not to make the speech at the public square, because his people did not want to share anything with outsiders. But he wanted to see new faces and hear new ideas.
We know everyone here is excited. Central Square has been closed down for years now and we’ve promised to open up a new central. And now we have the right spot.
The crowd cheered. It was finally time to expand their business and build a new park. Iru had plans of his own. He kept in touch with Barishin, his best friend, and was now working on a project with him. It was time to make the greatest invention ever. He and his family could start their own business.
So now what? Who has money to buy a piece of the land anyway? This is all for nothing.
He heard a boy yell to his friend over the cheers.
Nothing for you, you mean. I’ve been saving my money.
He heard another reply as the boy rubbed his palms together grinning.
Iru listened as he pushed his way through the crowd. He had to let his parents know about it. Finally they could make more money. He and Barishin wanted to be the first to sell intergalactic transporters. If they were successful in making one that transported from Barishin’s home world to Iru’’s world, they would make more and become rich and famous overnight. Iru didn’t really care about inventing things, he just wanted to rule the country and become the next king. It was his dream that he was determined to make come true.
After the announcement, he cut across the back through the woods, where he found some old wires that Cleo had buried in the dirt. Cleo owned a root business. He called the business root, because he sold wires that could change into liquid which he then buried into walls. The police couldn’t wait to catch Cleo and his crooked ways. He made lots of money cutting corners. He got rid of his products by dumping it in the forest, instead of recycling it. But Iru had seen him and knew where he stashed the wires. It was the perfect thing for him to use for his project.
He reached his home, out of breath from running. The door slammed hard against the wall, loosening up the hinges. He was constantly being scolded about pushing the door open too hard. He still had switch marks on his rear end that his father made from not listening. He was too old for getting scolded with a switch, yet his father didn’t care; but neither did Iru. He took his lashings and continued to follow his own rules.
He ran home with excitement. Winded, Iru spurted out the announcement to his father, Sydon. Sydon was, also, excited but his excitement fell short. It was the bitter reality that they just didn’t have enough money. He never thought the king would make good on his promises and instead of saving, he had used some of the money to make the house bigger in hopes of having more children. Iru needed a sister. He was too spoiled. If Iru had the responsibility of being the big brother, he would listen better.
We can still do something! I’m not going to give up. You guys can. But I won’t!
Iru shouted as he left the room. He wasn’t going to give his parents any chance of ruining his dreams. He was going to be successful no matter what. He stormed out to his room. He threw the wires in the container that was in the corner of his bedroom, before calling Barishin. The announcement was great news for Barishin, for he had money to use and invest with Iru.
We can just use my money and finish building our transporter. Did you do what I’ve told you?
I’ve got the wires. I think they are still good. I’m working on it. I think it’s ready for testing after I install them.
Good. I can’t wait.
I’ll test it out. You’ll know for sure when I make it to your cave.
No, no, no! Iru! You can’t go into it yourself. What if it doesn’t work? And you end up somewhere else? Or worse!
"
Iru laughed. Barishin was being his usual crazy self. It was just a machine. If it doesn’t work, nothing would happen.
Oh, come on! You’re being over dramatic again.
Iru laughed.
"You’re not taking me seriously or this project! It’s a real serious thing. You have to test it with
