    Vayikra: Personal Sacrifices

    Leviticus 1:1–5:26

    Whether one offers much or little makes no difference, if only one's heart is directed to God.

    Sifra to Leviticus 1:17

    The standard sacrifice is described, as an introduction to the sacrificial system which follows. This is a voluntary offering brought by an individual.

    In thanksgiving, the Israelites are instructed to offer the sacrifice of well-being, a festive meal eaten by the one bringing the sacrifice and his guests. Often this is referred to as a peace-offering.

    The sin-offering comes next, followed by a guilt-offering which is prescribed as a penalty.

    He shall bring it to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, for acceptance on his behalf before Adonai.

    Leviticus 1:3

    Here our souls are bared. There is no room for cleverness or deceit. Nor is there any need. In Tents of Meeting or rooms of Fellowship. Be open and honest. It’s hard—but you are among friends. Really!
