Word Come Alive: an extended translation (paraphrase) of the New Testament that shows additional explanatory phrases in italics in actual text. For example, 1 John 3:1-3:
Stop and look at the amazing love the Father has lavished on us! He has poured his love into our lives so generously. Let the wonderful reality of the Father’s love for you impress itself deeply into your being. He has taken the initiative to call us the children of God. Just think: we are his own dear children! Remember that is who we are at this very moment. The reason why people do not recognise us as God’s children is that they did not know him. Dear friends, we are the children of God right now. What we will be like is not yet fully clear to us, but what is absolutely clear is this: we know that when Christ appears at his return, we will be like him, because we will see him. Yes, you and I will actually see Christ! We will see him as he really is. Everyone – every child of God – who has such a hope in Christ’s glorious return makes themselves pure, just as he is pure. They will keep themselves inwardly clean, removing anything that conflicts with what Christ is like.

The Word of life
<1>Our theme is the Word of life, the Word that is life itself, the Word that gives life. The Word – the message – took on physical form in Jesus. The message is Jesus himself. Jesus is the good news, in fact the best news, for the whole world. The powerful reality we ourselves have experienced of Jesus and his message means that we really want to boldly declare the message of Jesus to you.
He has always existed from even before the beginning of time. I had the privilege of being an eyewitness to his earthly life. We have heard him with our own ears; we have seen and watched him closely with our own eyes and we have even touched his body with our own hands. <2>His life was revealed for all to see. We have seen who he is and so are now giving evidence about him: we declare to you the eternal life that was always in the immediate presence of God the Father and has now been displayed to us.
<3>I cannot say this too often. We have seen and heard this Word of life so clearly that we declare to you this message of life in order that you too will share this life with us. In fact, we share life with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. <4>We are writing this letter so that we will be filled with joy.
God is light
<5>Here is the message that we have heard from him and want to pass on and declare to you: God is light. His radiant majesty blazes out perfection and purity. His light unveils reality as he displays everything in its true colours. He clearly shows us the right way – the best way – to live.
