I was a little disappointed when i read this to see Naomi mentioned with having children when the stitches in time series is supposed to take place after this series. I only discovered this series after finishing stitches in time so i know Naomi is the main female character in the second book of the stitches in time series and only marries after Jenny has been married for a few years. Other than that i love these books.

This is not the typical book I would read. Romance is not my favorite genre. But I did enjoy this. It is not too sappy. It tells the story of a women Jenny who was injured in war and returns to her grandmothers Amish home to heal. While she is there she see her former love. A widowed Amish man and his three children. Her two worlds are so completely different. Her English world in New York City and the Amish world she shares with her grandmother. Will her worlds come together or collide in a disastrourous way?

I have to say I was a tad disappointed in this book. For me it could of ended at about the 200 page mark, I didn't see much use of the last 80 pages. As in many Amish books there near the end an accident occurs but it was unnecessary. I didn't see how it added to the story at all - the couple was already happy and didn't need brought back together through this accident.

I'm a rather torn with this book. If you've read any of my previous reviews involving Amish books, you know how conflicted I am about them. I really like the ones that embrace the lifestyle without romanticizing it. I am interested in them and I would like to know more about their culture. However at the same time, I don't like books that are preaching at me for not being a part of their lifestyle. It's a fine line to walk on and I feel like some books cross the line too much for me.What I really did enjoy about this book was Jennie's love and dedication to helping out children in war torn countries. She is extremely passionate about it and even in her injured state is constantly worrying about them. She wants to get the word out to everyone even to those out in the Amish community because this is a cause that is near and dear to her heart. Even after her final decision about what she is going to do with her life, she is still not going to give up on helping them. That is something I really liked about the book because just because her lifestyle is going to change, it does not mean she is going to give up her dedication to help. Her grandmother is also a delightful character. Even though her own son left the faith, she holds no grudge and is willing to help out Jennie in her time of need. I very much liked that Jennie is allowed to be English as much time as she needs to be due to her injuries. While Jennie's story as a war correspondent is fascinating, the Amish aspect of this book left me a little disturbed. This book felt to me that the Amish community wants to stay completely separate and unknowing about the rest of the world. While I understand that they may not want to deal with modern conveniences and want to live a simple lifestyle, I do not find it encouraging that they are ignorant of other cultures or even other countries. The characters in this book seemed to know nothing about what was going on in the rest of the world and though they seemed a bit sad that there are children suffering, they don't really seem to care. It seems like it's the world's fault for not living a lifestyle like theirs as the reason for their suffering. Then there's the fact that it's mentioned that Amish children in the story are all blond haired and blue eyed. That's a little frightening that there's absolutely no diversity at all in the community. What bothers me so much is that many people feel that Amish lifestyle is the perfect utopia so characterizations like this are very scary.I am also really not a fan of people becoming Amish. Jennie's decision does not happen because of anything to do with faith issues. It happens because she's in love. While love is important, in this type of case, it doesn't seem like it's enough to justify her decision. The Amish world is seen here as a perfect world. It just really scares me at how romanticized this lifestyle has become. Overall, Cameron's writing is engaging. As I said before, I did like Jennie's character for her dedication to her cause. Plus there's a lots of mention of food which I do always love reading about in Amish books. I just don't know if I can read any more stories like this because I feel like it's portraying the wrong type of image.

I love Barbara Cameron’s books. It’s not just a romance story. There are always elements of mystery included in her writing. In this story, the first in the Quilts of Lancaster County, I found the characters to be very believable and yet leaves you with just enough questions to make people like me want to research more of the Amish lifestyle. The difference between the two worlds, that of the Englisch and the Amish is well defined yet the author shows us the parallels between the two cultures. The ending of the book was satisfying yet left you wondering what was going to happen next. The reader doesn’t have to wonder long because they can find out when they red the second book in the series, “A Time to Heal”.

This story had me crying almost all the way through it. It was very heart wrenching. Her trials through her recovery and coming to terms with the injuries and how/why they happened very poignant. Her renewal of faith and acceptance spot on. Her relationship with her Grandmother was wonderful, we all could only hope to have something so special.

While Cameron is a good writer, I am not convinced she is familiar with the Amish belief system. She mentions in passing that the characters are Old Order Amish, but she has them doing things that Old Order Amish would never consider. When Jenny goes back to New York for more surgery, her grandmother goes with her, while she is still in the hospital, David tells her that he has arranged for them to return to Lancaster County on a private plane. Phoebe (grandmother) did not protest or contact her bishop to see if he would allow them to return in a plane. When Jenny decides to become Amish in order to marry Matthew, no one objects that she is becoming Amish in order to marry. She continues to dress in Englisch clothing and use her laptop, even though she is suppose to be studying the Ordnung. There is no mention of studying with the bishop, only with her grandmother. While the Amish have 'classes' before they are baptized, they are not held anytime someone decides to be baptized or to embrace the Amish religion. Her wedding is scheduled for November and no mention is made of Jenny and Matthew being published, a big part of the process. No mention is made of the bishop at all except for when Matthew says he will talk to him if Josiah continues to object to their marriage and when Matthew talks to him to see when Jenny can be baptized. It seems that the bishop had very little to do with the whole process. Despite her unfamiliarity with the Amish, the author has written a good book. It held my interest, for the most part. It was just irksome to note all the errors when it came to Amish life.

A TIME TO LOVE by Barbara Cameron is an inspirational romance set in modern day Lancaster County, PA. It is the first in the Quilts of Lancaster County Series. It is well written with details and depth. It is a tender love story full of love, promise, hope, healing, faith,Amish, and second chances. It is the story of a journalist,Jenny, who is injured, from a bomb blast, while reporting on the conditions, and stories of children in war torn countries. Her father was Amish, but choose to live in the English world. She spent a few summers with her Amish grandmother. During her time with her grandmother she meets, Matthew, and quickly becomes friends. Then her father takes her back to the English world, where she goes to college and becomes a journalist. Matthew, her Amish friend, thought there was more between them, marries a year after Jenny leaves without any word from her. His wife dies of cancer. Leaving him with three little children. Jenny returns to Lancaster County, to her grandmother's house to recover from her injuries. Her and Matthew quickly falls back in love and decide to marry. Although, I enjoyed this story, I would have liked to seen a more of the ending for the young couple, as they start their life together. I would recommend this book especially if you enjoy Amish, a sweet tender love story, and the healing that can take place after tragic events in someone's life. This story is full of God's promises and faith. This book was received for review from Net Galley and details can be found at Abingdon Press and My Book Addiction and More.
