Four girls in the 1950s go out to dances on Saturday nights. All is well until Helen, the most well-off of the quartet, decides to 'borrow' a glamorous and revealing dress.. with devastating results.

We follow the daily lives of the four girls and their families over the next few months, complete with joys and sadnesses, surprises, and the gradual maturing of each. The book is well-written and mostly believable, although it took me a while to sort out who was who.
