It's ten years ago tonight that Senior Historians Bashford and Grey went missing in twelfth-century Jerusalem. So how did they end up in AD60 Roman Colchester? Max has a theory. Peterson has a plan. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It's Christmas Eve at St. Mary's Priory, and nothing is stirring at all--except that Max, Peterson, and Markham are off on another unauthorized assignment, this time to rescue senior historians Bashford and Grey, who vanished in 12th century Jerusalem ten years ago. (St. Mary's researches important historical events in contemporary time; don't call it "time travel." That would be vulgar!)
The missing historians aren't 12th century Jerusalem; that at least is clear. But Max has a theory, Peterson has a plan, and Markham is supplying the crucial bacon sandwiches. (Markham, a security officer, has been their best provisioner from the beginning.) It'll be a quick in and out, and correctly timed, they'll be snatching Bashford and Grey from where they've only just been dumped. What could possibly go wrong?
This is the St. Mary's crew, and the answer is everything. And it doesn't stem from lack of professionalism, preparation, or intelligence. On the contrary!
No, it's just a combination of professional historical curiosity and being natural magnets for trouble. Also the fact that everywhere they go is historically important--in this case, right into a major battle in Boudiccea's rebellion against the Romans...
Their determination and Max's sidewise view of their challenges and sry sense of humor make these stories hard to resist.
Recommended.
I bought this audiobook. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Its Christmas and time for their usual caper for their celebration. Let's rescue our lost historians, from Ronan, before they get run over by Queen Boadicea and her hoards. Nothing to it? Right!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Kleio, the Muse of History, sets in motion another St Mary's adventure by taking Max to one event ten years in the past and one event in the immediate future, which is a result of the former. Unsurprisingly, Max decides to act. Taking Peterson and Markham with her on a trip that's very much off the books, she travels to Colchester in AD60, immediately before Boudicca decides to raze the town to the ground. The usual St Mary's mayhem ensues.I'm reading the series in sequence, and I got the impression that the events described in this short story will have a bearing on subsequent novels. Jodi Taylor's decision to focus not only on the relationship between Maxwell and Leon, but also on other characters at St Mary's, pays dividends, and I see each story as the opportunity to revisit old friends. I'm already looking forward to the next title in the series.
