    CHAPTER ONE

Shaylin looked out over the majestic mountains that were her home. Her haven. She’d almost lost it, she thought. All of it.

She was a princess of the kingdom of Barico. Her father had ruled the land with a firm but compassionate hand. And she’d lived a life of prosperity and relative peace. Until a few months ago.

Her father and her family had been betrayed. From within the royal court. Barico’s chief advisor to the king had conspired to steal the crown. And had nearly succeeded with the death of her father.

But one man had stood against the rebellion. One man had saved her brother, the heir to the throne. One man had returned her and her family to their home. She sighed. One man had stolen her heart.

The most amazing part, to her thinking, was that that one man wasn’t even a Baricoan. He’d come to them mysteriously from a land he’d called America. She had no idea how he’d come to be in Barico or where his land of America was, but the one thing she did know was he had saved them all. He was the mighty Tristan of Barico.

And she’d nearly gotten her happy ever after. Nearly. Her brother, the new king of Barico, had been all set to announce her betrothal to Tristan to the entire kingdom. Her heart had been so full, she’d feared it might burst.

Then the messenger had come. The emperor of Jaguria, enemy of Barico, had wanted an audience with Tristan. Her entire family had agreed that they wouldn’t dare turn Tristan over to their enemy. But the emperor had refused such a denial and taken the matter into his own hands, having given his messenger a warning not to return without Tristan.

The messenger had taken Tristan against his will in the middle of the night. Stolen him from his chambers like a thief in the night. She was sure Tristan had been taken by force. He would never have gone willing.

Her brother, the new king of Barico, had been understandably reluctant to act. To act was to declare war. And Barico had been weakened by its internal struggle for the crown over the last several months. The kingdom, as well as the people, needed time to recover its strength. A war with Jaguria would topple them before that recovery could take place.

Shaylin knew the truth of her brother’s concerns, but she resented them nonetheless. She’d wanted so badly to send every force Barico boasted after Tristan.
