The New Science of the Paranormal - Carl Llewellyn Weschcke

    About the Authors

    © Lisa Novak

Carl Llewellyn Weschcke was Chairman of Llewellyn Worldwide, Ltd., one of the oldest and largest publishers of New Age, Metaphysical, Self-Help, and Spirituality books in the world. He held a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration (Babson), and studied Law (LaSalle Extension University) and completed advanced academic work toward a doctorate in Philosophy (University of Minnesota). He also held a certificate in clinical hypnosis and honorary recognitions in divinity and magical philosophy.

In addition to book publishing, he worked in the pharmaceutical industry, furniture manufacturing, and real estate management. With Llewellyn, he worked in all aspects of the business: advertising, editing, production, writing, astrological calculation, design and layout, typesetting, cover design, direct selling, bookstore management, trade sales, designing systems and procedures, printing and purchasing, warehouse and shipping, and mopping floors.

Carl was a life-long student of a broad range of Metaphysical, Spiritual, and Psychological subjects, and variously studied with the Rosicrucian Order, the Arcane School, and the Society of the Inner Light. After corresponding with Gerald Gardner and several of his associates in the late 1950s and early 1960s, he became known for holding the Weschcke Documents, including a carbon copy of Gardner’s own Book of Shadows.

He was a former Wiccan High Priest and played a leading role in the rise of Wicca and Neo-Paganism during the 1960s and 1970s. Authors Scott Cunningham and Donald Michael Kraig referred to him as the Father of the New Age because of his early and aggressive public sponsorship of new understanding of old occult subjects. In the fall of 1973, Weschcke helped organize the Council of American Witches and became its chairperson. Weschcke drafted The Thirteen Principles of Belief statement, a cornerstone of modern Wicca. This document was incorporated into the U.S. Army’s handbook for chaplains.

In addition to his evolving writing pursuits, he retained ties to the Wiccan and Neo-Pagan communities through many Llewellyn authors. He was 7th Past Grandmaster of Aurum Solis, an international magical order founded in Great Britain in 1897. While Chairman of Llewellyn, he actively wrote and engaged in studies and practical research in Analytical Psychology and Parapsychology; Tarot and Divination; Quantum Theory and Cosmology; Astrology, Magick, and Kabbalah; Meditation, Hypnosis and Alternative Health; Shamanism, Tantra, Taoism, and World Spirituality; Mythology, Wicca, and Neo-Paganism; History, Geo-Politics, and Philosophy. He also authored and co-authored nine books, several e-books and audio products, and a new edition with commentary of The Compete Magick Curriculum of the Secret Order G...B...G...

Carl passed away in the fall of 2015, but his indelible contributions to the study and practice of spirituality will be remembered and honored for generations to come.

    JUDITH HIPSKIND COLLINS

As a senior in college, Judy worked long distance with Dr. J. B. Rhine on the thesis ESP in the Noosphere of Teilhard de Chardin and established a correspondence with Dr. Rhine that lasted several years. Judy worked as a teaching assistant at Indiana University while getting Master’s degree, and continued with self-taught studies in paranormal fields. Taught Spanish at the University of Wisconsin at LaCrosse.

She explored ESP with experiments and learned handwriting analysis while in grade school. Judy has a life-long interest in ESP, graphology, palmistry, astrology, numerology, body language, parapsychology, meditation, mediumship, dream interpretation, symbolism and language arts. During her junior year in Madrid (Spain) she met a woman who read hands and her work inspired a study and career as a palmist.

    Minneapolis Career

In 1970, she joined Llewellyn at the invitation of Carl Weschcke to help found and serve as Dean of the Gnostica School for Self-Development, which featured a curriculum of subjects ranging from astrology to yoga. The school was successful and activities included open houses, lectures, meet and greet with authors and experts from the U.S. and England. This format expanded into several annual festivals, including the First International Aquarian Festival, in September 1971. Subsequent Festivals were known as Gnosticons, and inspired similar Metaphysical and Pagan Conferences worldwide.

While at Llewellyn, she worked as a spokesperson for our programs and the metaphysical world, appearing on local television and radio shows, lecturing on college campuses, at theological seminaries, women’s clubs and more.

She also worked as a consultant for psychologist Dr. John Geier, University of Minnesota, using knowledge of graphology, body language and hands, to work with patients in his practice, and as a lecturer at Veterans’ Hospitals and for various businesses.

Judith volunteered at the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center, helping children to understand themselves using handwriting and palmistry. This work expanded to prisons and halfway houses in the Minneapolis area.

She began work on the first of three books published by Llewellyn Worldwide, Palmistry, The Whole View, 1977, followed by The New Palmistry, 1993, and The Hand from A to Z, 2005.

Judith also worked as an entertainer, reading hands at the Gnostica Retail Store, at parties and at a local Minneapolis restaurant, where a woman customer introduced her to the work of author Anaïs Nin. Established a correspondence with Anaïs Nin that led to moving to Dallas, Texas.

    Dallas Career

At the invitation of Anaïs Nin, she researched and interpreted astrological charts of historical figures ranging from twelfth century monarchs, cardinals and popes to present day poets and scholars, with an emphasis on French writers. Her cousin Eduardo Sanchez spent 35 years in Europe gathering the data for these charts from a wide array of sources. This work, along with his original critical studies of Niccolo Machiavelli and the Medici family, is stored in private archives at Southern Methodist University.

While working with Eduardo Sanchez’s archives, she joined a parapsychology group at Southern Methodist University run by a local Jungian analyst, graduate of the Jungian Institute in Switzerland. Dr. J. B. Rhine came to address this group one weekend, and after 10 years of correspondence, we met in person in Dallas.

Other opportunities included annual trips to London to research Celtic history and the Druids at the British Museum in London, under the sponsorship of the man in charge of the Reading Room; travel to Australia and to New Zealand, giving talks to Embassy wives in Wellington, NZ, and appearing on local television and radio shows.

Her work in Dallas focused on palmistry and led to the development of a new approach to interpreting hands through the meaning of the knuckles (see The New Palmistry, Llewellyn 1993). She developed a full time private clientele with individual consultations as the main focus, and also worked as an entertainer for Dallas area hotels and corporate clients.

    Terre Haute Career

In 2008, Judith moved to Terre Haute, Indiana, to work on two books, the first on the world of trees and their value as a source of collected wisdom and an aid to personal growth, and the second on numerology, on the power of number patterns on a grid, to determine individual purpose and fulfillment.

In 2015, she began researching and writing Signature Power for Llewellyn. This book provides the basis both for analysis of the personal Signature and self-therapy through deliberate alterations of various components of the Signature.

This Book is dedicated to the

    Father of 20th Century Parapsychology

    J. B. Rhine

Widely recognized as the Father of Parapsychology, J. B. Rhine established the study of parapsychology as an academic discipline and developed the foundational concepts and research methodology required for it to assume scientific recognition. The results include the professionalization of parapsychology not only in the U. S. but also on a transcultural scale.

In today’s diverse global community, the contemporary relevance of J. B. Rhine’s early groundbreaking research stands firmly on scientific grounds. Aside from the detailed procedures and controls characterizing his lab studies, he developed the advanced analytical and statistical methods required to determine the significance of the experimental data. Beyond the lab, he inspired the application and advancement of parapsychology to include its inclusion as an academic discipline in higher education along with the establishment of professional parapsychology organizations and academic journals.

    J. B. Rhine’s analytical and statistical contributions to parapsychology as a science are among the seminal inspirations for not only the detailed lab studies presented in this book but for the numerous research-based applications beyond the lab.

    PREFACE

    What we want to accomplish

    in writing this book

This book came into being after several years of discussion between the authors and others about what historic and modern psychic research has accomplished.

No longer is the split between materialism and spiritualty as absolute as at the beginning of the 20th Century. The role of laboratory research in showing that quite normal people commonly show some degree of paranormal ability was a major factor as is the new knowledge and increasing understanding of the psyche as a whole. Equally important is the role of quantum physics bringing awareness of the multi-layered Cosmos in which we live and have our being.

    JOE WRITES . . .

Controlled laboratory research is essential to our understanding of paranormal phenomena. Research not only validates the existence of the paranormal, it pushes back the borders of contemporary science and offers new ways of understanding ourselves and the universe. It reveals new possibilities for acquiring knowledge and developing our highest potentials. With the integration of paranormal insight, a new and surging force of growth energy is unleashed within. Beyond that, external dimensions of knowledge and power become readily accessible and previously unattainable goals become realistic possibilities. There exists, in fact, no end to the empowering possibilities of paranormal power beyond the lab.

The controlled studies presented in this book offer detailed research evidence of the existence of the paranormal. The laboratory studies, including those funded by the U. S. Army, the Parapsychology Foundation of New York, and the Parapsychology Research Institute and Foundation, were each conducted by the author, often with the assistance of co-investigators, in a highly controlled laboratory setting at Athens State University. The technical reports for additional studies and the developmental exercises based on them are likewise on file in the Athens State University Library Archives.

Although more research is needed to further explore the complex dynamics as well as the many practical applications of the paranormal, the evidence based on the existing body of research is clear: the paranormal potential, like intelligence, exists in everyone. It can be experienced in both direct and indirect forms. Its manifestations can range from general to highly
