This novelette is from a short portion of my life. It involved a time from about 1997 to 2013. I had the opportunity to work in several major motion pictures that were made in my hometown Cleveland, Ohio. I was the one that began to call our town, Hollywood Midwest
.
I worked in most of these projects as an extra. That’s exactly what we are extras or background people
. I first heard about background people when I was about 10 or 11 years old. My sisters referred to the people in a show called Wagon Train making money as background.
They were the people in the soft focus behind the main actors…scene fillers performing some activity.
There were thousands of them in some of the battles in movies like Spartacus
.
There were too many of them to name in film credits…So that’s how I titled this project. I became one of those little people…thus the name: Movie Extra…No Credit
that’s me Ric Hampton. The most unassuming guy to ever walk on a movie set…
Every person has a journey thru this thing we call life. Many people have come and gone. Some have left indelible marks, others were just extras on this great movie canvas. The scenes play out daily, intricately woven together many times over. All to create a doormat for some alien species to come one day and wipe their feet upon it.
My life has no meaning I guess, except to me. Yet some of the stories from it are of interest to those that have met me. These are not people that have known me for the 60+, years I’ve lived. These are people that I have let in at various times. I may have used a story from my past to make an analogy in a conversation. The person I am conversing with had no idea that I once lived such an interesting and sometimes colorful life. They all have come to the same conclusion that some of it would make some good reading.
Personally? If someone came and told me that one man lived under the radar and did these things, I would say it was the biggest piece of bullshit ever told. Well since it’s me, everything in most cases has been documented in newspaper, photos, recording and video.
I never made national news, or even a local police blotter. I’ve been poor yet never rich, yet rich in many other ways. I came to find many ways to seize opportunities to make money. I only used what I needed and never to any excess. You see, that was one of the first lessons I learned from my mother.
The following story is about a portion of my life, a part that was so unexpected and almost as surreal. Imagine that you fell asleep one night. When you wake up the next morning, you are sitting in a car in one of Cleveland’s old neighborhoods. Standing outside of the car is cinematographer, Phillippe Rouselott, and Oscar winner, Denzel Washington. They are peering at you through a loop, while setting up a shot for a major motion picture. It happened to me a few years ago here in Cleveland, Ohio. How I came upon this opportunity began from birth. A destiny to go on a journey and meet all the right people at the right time.
These times are from my first memories of life and things around me. The time has to be about 1953 or so, in a place called Sharon, West Virginia. This is a small coal mining community made up of black families and whites families. I recall a cold winter day outside. I got up from a warm bed and put my feet on to a cold linoleum floor. My feet quickly found the old throw rug. By now I’m jolted awake and realize that I’ve got to pee. I
