About this ebook

What is enlightenment? What does it do for me? How do I get there? Who or what is God? And who am I really? These are all questions most of us ask from time to time, and some of us insistently.

In this book the sage invites the reader to come to the truth of who you are, to see your original face, your face before you were born.

Discursive communications on such themes serve to obfuscate rather than clarify, often leading to outrage, confusion and division. On the other hand parables and stories transmit deeper truths intuitively, conveying an understanding way beyond the mind.

These stories are not only pointers but also catalysts – they precipitate understanding and guide their inherent wisdom to seep gently to the heart.

Seeing Your Face Without A Mirror - Francis Valloor

    Call

    Awakening

A woman was frustrated that in spite of her many entreaties, the husband would still not take to spirituality.

More than anything else this is what I wish for my husband who is otherwise a good man lost in business and materialism, she said. When I plead with him, he only gets impatient and irritable.

Never force, cajole or push anyone, even those who are dearest to you, onto the spiritual path, said the sage. It simply doesn’t work. It is important to make the song of awakening sound like a lullaby for those who feel the need to prolong their sleep.

    Visualisation

I’ve meditated for long years. I’ve fasted and prayed for spiritual transformation. Lately I’ve tried visualisation but the outcome has always eluded me. Is there anything I can do?"

Flowers have only to open for the bees to appear, the sage commented. They don’t need to visualise or use affirmations.

    Response

A middle-aged man said that he was attracted to the spiritual life but he feared it would lead to having to give up everything if he took that call seriously.

Genuine spirituality is not conditioned on renunciation, the sage noted. It never takes you out of life but helps you live it more deeply.

Even so, I’m afraid that there could be changes in my life that I may not like.

Responding to the call to a deeper life certainly leads to changes, the sage said. It may appear smart to stay put, but how poorer people are when they hold themselves back!

    Comprehension

The sage always spoke in simple language and avoided jargons and theoretical discussions. Yet some listeners had difficulty understanding him.

A lot of what you say goes over people’s heads, grumbled a visitor.

I can only teach what I do, the sage replied. It is not given to me to make anyone understand. The truth is that those who are meant to hear will understand. Those who are not meant to understand will not hear.

    Initiative

Is it up to me to be a seeker or to drop out of the farce of my life?" a visitor asked.

It would appear so, the sage replied. Tell me, did you sign up to be a seeker or did it come upon you?

It came upon me, the man replied. Does that mean I don’t have to do anything?

Do whatever you do when you’re flying: be comfortable and enjoy the flight. Gradually you may give up the fantasy of being the pilot, the sage said.

    Longing

We are all different and we all have different longings and destinies, a visiting scholar proposed.

What we long for may be different, what makes us do so is the same, was the sage’s response.

    Compromise

A woman who felt drawn to live an authentic spiritual life was faced with the challenges of leaving behind what no longer made any sense to her.

I’m afraid of giving up the world I have known and the love of those around me. I can’t hurt those who have loved me, she confided.

Would you give up your right to fly in order to soothe the fears of those on the ground? the sage asked.

    Exploration

A man who visited the sage a number of times volunteered the reason for his many visits. I may be called a sceptic, but I need to know the lay of the land in some detail before I can make a journey.

If you insist on a detailed map of the unknown country you are setting out to explore, you will never become an explorer, the sage said.

    Pilgrimage

A cancer patient had returned from a pilgrimage which she had undertaken with the hope of a cure. The sage who did not believe in the value of pilgrimages and religious rituals asked her how she had benefited from the experience.

I had gone expecting a miracle by which I’d be healed of cancer, she replied. What I got was peace of mind from the complete acceptance of my illness.

That is the real miracle! the sage responded with delight. A truly spiritual pilgrimage is the one that brings you from the outside to the inside, from the head to the heart.

    Guidance

The middle-aged lawyer was frustrated that though he had gone to many spiritual teachers and gurus hoping to receive some advice about how to be in contact with the Divine, nobody had been able to
