    ONE

Alessir stared at the forest canopy. No light could pierce through this part of the island, as the woods thickened and grew dark. Although it was midday, he couldn't see the sun. He spotted Keenan only because Keenan was a creature of habit. Since he couldn't find Keenan at his home, the only other choice was the old Willow tree in the middle of the dense jungle. Alessir watched Keenan at a close distance. Keenan had his back leaned against the tree. His body almost blended with the trunk of the Weeping Willow.

Do you know it's rude to stare, Alessir? asked Keenan.

Alessir chuckled. I was simply watching, he said.

Keenan pushed his body off the Willow tree and crawled out from under the drooping branches. He wiped his hands together and took a deep breath.

You should get out and have some sun, Keenan, said Alessir.

Keenan ignored his remark. What brings you to this part of the island? he asked.

I talked to the Elders, said Alessir.

Keenan nodded. So it's true then.

Yes, I'm here to ask for your help, Keenan.

You don't have to ask for anything, Alessir, said Keenan. You're the Prince of Banyan.

    But you're the Keeper of—

Keenan cut him off. I may be generations older than you, but you're still superior. He pointed at Alessir's chest. I've told you that once before. How many times do I have to remind you?

Alessir smiled. You're still superior in my eyes, he said, and meant it.

Keenan was his mentor, his teacher, his friend, and the Keeper of the Keepers. The only person Alessir felt inferior to was this being standing before him.

Never underestimate yourself, Alessir, said Keenan. He tapped on a small bamboo by the stream. Why do you need the Keepers?

Ripples of water appeared in the stream.

Alessir kept his eyes on the movement in the water. There was a… mysterious disappearance…

So the rumors are true, said Keenan. You're befriending the mortals.

    Alessir sighed. Yes, he said.

Keenan slapped his back. There are no secrets when it comes to you, Prince of Banyan. You should know that by now.

I'm beginning to wonder if Mother and Father sent me away at the exact same time the humans came to bulldoze my home.

Keenan froze in his tracks. That's a wild accusation, Alessir.

Tell me that thought never crossed your mind.

Keenan shrugged. It was a small Banyan tree.

It was my home… Alessir beat his chest. My very first home to call my own.

I'm sorry, Alessir, said Keenan. I truly am. He took out his machete and cut the bamboo. Where do you think the humans are?

Elder Urdus said to take the Keepers to Lucent Island, said Alessir.

Keenan stroked his chin and kept walking along the stream.

What's on your mind? asked Alessir.

Letting the Keepers roam is one thing, said Keenan. But to unleash them on Lucent Island is a whole different matter.

I admit I wasn't prepared to hear that the folks on Lucent Island are involved, but Elder Urdus is rarely wrong, said Alessir.

Not rarely, said Keenan. He's never wrong.

Are you willing to release some of the Keepers to me? asked Alessir.

How many times do I have to tell you… Keenan let out a loud sigh. You don't have to ask for permission, Alessir.

Alessir scratched his head. Fine, release the Keepers, Keenan.

    Keenan smiled. Now, that's better.

Keenan threw the bamboo in the stream and mumbled something under his breath. The ripples reappeared and grew bigger. The water churned and turned into a monstrous whirlpool. Alessir had seen this only once when he was under Keenan's watch. It amazed him how the series of waves appeared on the surface as if someone pulled a plug from underneath, sucking the water into the ground. If memory served him right, something was going to surface. He took a few steps back.

Keenan turned slightly to him. Don't worry, Alessir. It won't hurt you.

I still remember the last time this happened. I was soaked to the bones. You didn't bother to warn me.

Keenan laughed. I'm sorry. I forgot I wasn't alone when I called upon the Keepers.

It was as if Keenan had said the magic word. A faceless figure covered in black oily substance shot out from the hole. Muddy water splashed all over the riverbank. Alessir jumped farther back. Yet, some of the water splattered on his robe. He studied Keenan from head to toe. Not a drop fell on him. Alessir sighed. He had to be more careful and prepared next time.

If there were a next time, he thought, as the human-like figure rose with his arms wide open.

    TWO

Kathleen Bernard marched around the perimeter of the white house over and over until she lost count. A few times, she caught herself biting her fingernails. It was a habit she tried to stop for years, but obviously failed. A few days ago, her friends Lisa Miles and Seth Marshall had gone missing. No, not missing. They had been kidnapped. There were traces of blood at the house showing there had to be some kind of struggle. Her lips quivered, and she started to bite on her fingernail again.

You have to stop that, Kate, said Alex Landon.

    Kate spun around. Stop what?

Alex pointed to her hand. That. You won't have any more nails if you keep biting them off.

Kate stared at her ragged nails and smiled. I can't help it.

Have you heard from Prince of Banyan? asked Alex.

Prince of Banyan was a mysterious person or being that lived on the island, in a tree. How that was possible, Kate didn't know. She was still trying to wrap her head around the fact that someone could live in a tree. Not on, but inside. That didn't sound humanly possible.

Kate shook her head. No, I haven't, she said.

We scoured the island and found nothing, said Alex. I don't think they're here.

Kate made a beeline for the backyard. I don't think so either, she said. Sharlene and Jed are going to send help our way. So, that's good news.

I bet the O'Shaunessys felt responsible for what happened, he said.

It's not really their fault, she said. We all know the risks coming to this island.

Yeah, said Alex. We should have figured out the danger when we named it Island X.

Kate sat down in the rattan chair. No kidding, she said.

Alex sat down next to her. So what do we do now?

Kate sighed. I've never felt so helpless in my life. There's no one to turn to. Uncle Timmy locks himself in his room and Joe is nowhere to be found.

I remembered Joe mentioned something about talking to his grandmother, but what can she do? he asked.

Timothy Williams walked out the back door and sat down next to Alex. What are you two talking about?

Kate and Alex exchanged uneasy glances. From the short time they were together, she gathered that there was some animosity between Uncle Timmy and Joe's grandmother.

We're just wondering where Joe is, said Alex.

Uncle Timmy grunted. Kate and Alex looked at each other.

I don't know why he wanted to get his grandmother involved in this, said Uncle Timmy. I can handle it on my own.

Kate gripped the arms on the rattan chair. Did you find out where Lucy and Seth are? she asked.

They're no longer on this island, said Uncle Timmy.

So where are they? asked Alex.

Uncle Timmy shrugged. I shall get the answer tonight.

Kate swallowed hard. What's going to happen tonight?

Don't worry, said Uncle Timmy. Nothing bad will befall either of you. He sighed. Sadie will bring me the news.

Alex lowered his voice and asked, What can she do?

    She has connections…

Kate felt her heart racing. With the spirits? she asked.

Alex spun toward her. His eyes grew big. Kate expected a lashing from Uncle Timmy. Instead, he nodded.

    Yes, he said.

Sadie was a spirit that lived in an old mirror. Kate's human mind couldn't comprehend how anyone or anything could live inside something that wasn't inhabitable.

Have you heard from Prince of Banyan? asked Uncle Timmy.

    No, said Kate.

That brought her back to the mysterious being living inside a tree. It must the in thing to do on this
