About this ebook
How can you turn your dreams into reality? How do you respond when bad things happen in your life? What are key elements to keeping a family together? What does it mean to act wisely? How do you influence your “battlespace”?
“Now You Know” is chock-full of advice on these and many other topics pertinent to our daily lives.
Author Fred “Val” Valentine Jr. is not a professional writer, but is a typical father who, while deployed in the military, took time to capture some thoughts on his life for his sons. He felt it was important to let them know what his challenges were in life and to give pointers, based on his experience, on the best way to move forward in a life filled with challenges and obstacles. The result is this book.
Val invites you to take this journey through his story. Each succinct chapter provides sound advice that will help you achieve success on the “battlefield” of life.

A Story Is Born
It comes from knowledge of the past.
I began writing this book as a personal statement while I was deployed during Operation Enduring Freedom/Iraqi Freedom from December 2002 until June 2003. There, I wasn’t, by any means, engaged in combat. I was responsible for the defense contractors that supported the troops and managed the tent cities where they bedded down. In order to manage these contracts, I spent a lot of time traveling from one country to another, setting up and taking down tent cities. While waiting for my flights, I was able to collect my thoughts and record them electronically, then continually email the files to myself so I could access them wherever I was. Why did I do that?
It was not possible to be there and not wonder if I would ever make it home to see my family, friends, and other loved ones again. I wondered whether my kids really knew what I considered important and how their decisions would be guided if I were not there. So I wanted to take the time I had to put my thoughts, feelings, and beliefs on paper so they would know. I never quite figured out how these would get to them via Internet if I didn’t make it back, but I had to believe they would.
Though, thankfully, I have since returned home, I have continued to write. I felt I needed to revise my writing, as my thoughts weren’t complete. Now, I write more as a passing fancy marking time than as a project for my sons. Now that I’ve returned, hopefully over time, I will have a chance to demonstrate my thoughts to my sons through my example. However, if my example ever falls short, I want my kids to know what I believe is important and to learn from my personal triumphs, failures, goals, and aspirations. Additionally, this book will provide me with a form of ever-vigilant mentor that I can rely upon for advice and accountability. Every year around Christmas, I try to take time to sit down, have a cigar, read what I have written, and possibly fill in the blanks.
A while back, I read that we all leave a legacy, whether we want to or not. During an interview, NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley said he was not a role model. I don’t think we have that option. Our lives and actions are perceived by and affect others, whether we want them to or not. In my life, I have
