      I couldn’t see the carpet because of the pile-up of dirty laundry that had found its home there. I scanned over everything I could see. I was looking for something that could pass as clean. I spotted a tank top I’d only worn a couple of times screwed into a ball by the door, and I skipped across the clutter to get to it. I brought it up to my nose and gave it a quick sniff.
