Introduction
Once upon a time, in a land far, far away…
I’ve always wanted to start a book using that line. Ha!
Yes, I know…it’s normally how a fairy tale begins. But the stories I’m going to reveal in the pages ahead are anything but fantasy. They are 100% real—and I can attest to that, because actually they happened to me.
I nearly died when I was five years old. But that wasn’t the last time. I’ve since had three other brushes with death.
This book is about those four edge of death
experiences, and the lessons I learned from each of them.
A little about me:
I was raised in Illinois—the cities of Red Bud and Monticello to be exact.
I grew up with a Mom, Dad, an older brother and a younger brother.
Injuries, and their corresponding medical treatments, have been a big part of my life since I was a kid.
To give you a rundown, I’ve had:
More than thirty broken bones (I’ve actually lost count).
Twenty-two cortisone shots.
Five joint surgeries.
Two plates and twelve screws put in my body.
A nerve root block.
Compartment syndrome in eight muscles (I think I have that nearly defeated).
Numerous neck injuries.
Several oral surgeries.
When I was young, I broke a bone three days before, or three days after my birthday, for several years. (What are the odds?)

image.pngGiven my repertoire of injuries, you’d think I’m not athletic. But I’m actually a pretty good athlete.
Growing up—I played baseball, basketball, football, tennis, wrestling, and other sports.
As an adult—I golf, mountain bike, play softball, etc. I’ve been good and bad at all of these activities. (Ha, ha!)
I am also a health freak. I eat right, and I work out regularly.
You’d think, being an electrical engineer, that I always got good grades in school. Well, think again. I actually didn’t get good grades through most
