PILOT TRAINING
––––––––
Cadet Joe Devlin walked toward the hangar exit of the air dock. The heat of the day was already filling the air. Joe was wearing a lightweight flightsuit, having just removed his pilot gear. His upper collar and lower back were sweat-soaked and warm from wearing the bulky gear. A small breeze blowing through the hangar failed to cool him off.
Joe's X5 Viper Star Fighter was being refueled and readied for the next day’s flight. He had just completed a key training mission and his emotions were overflowing with feelings of achievement. Since being switched from a navigator to a cadet pilot, he had spent the last six months flying extra flights to catch up to his classmates. It had been physically and mentally demanding on him; however, he was finally caught up.
Joe was now halfway through his second year at the Space Academy as a Cadet Third Class and was becoming a skilled pilot. During his flight training, he out flew both the third and fourth year cadets. In a few simulated combat flights, he even beat some of the most experienced instructors.
This did not surprise most people who knew Joe, since he was the person who had almost single-handedly defeated the Tourians last year, saving the City of Dansburg. He was the first cadet to ever win the Medal of Valor and now was almost as famous as his father, Don Devlin, the Commander of the Black Aces. Commander Devlin was a legend in the Intergalactic Space Force, the ISF.
Joe’s home planet of Bandor was in its twelfth year of war, and its people desperately needed new heroes to distract them from the harsh realities of combat. Joe was their newest champion. This brought a newfound confidence to Joe’s attitude. Well at least until he saw her . . . Mandy Sand. She was beautiful, with long brown hair, blue eyes, and she was walking right toward him.
Joe had accidently tripped on a crack in the hangar floor, just as he was walking by her. Quickly regaining his composure, Joe tried to play it off, but it was too late. Mandy saw his misstep.
Cadet Mandy Sand was a Second Class, who Joe regularly flew against in the simulated combat flights. Even with her being senior in rank to him, they were equals in flight skills and he respected that. However, when around her on the ground, he kept on making a clumsy fool of himself.
Mandy slowly turned her head and waved to Joe, as she walked past him. At that precise moment, Joe tripped again, but this time on his own two feet. Unbelievable, thought Joe. I can’t even walk and say hello at the same time.
Mandy giggled at Joe’s stumble and then smiled, as she continued walking toward the hangar doors.
Joe quickly regained his balance, but it was too late to say hello. She was already walking through the doors. As Joe tried to follow her, Commander Nelson seemed to come out of nowhere, blocking his way.
Nelson had waited for Joe outside of the hangar and swiftly put his hand on Joe’s shoulder, making the block complete. Mandy disappeared into the stream of cadets walking to class. Cadet Devlin, I've heard that you caught up in the flight program.
Yes, Sir! I would like to keep flying double flights to get ahead, if they'll allow me?
Nelson looked bothered, as if he had something to tell Joe, but couldn't. I'll see what I can do.
Nelson paused for a few seconds, looking for his words. "Have you heard about the Tourian strikes against the ISF in the Void . . . recently? I mean, has anyone talked to you
