    Chapter 1

    Naufragium

Damn it, Christine Plum cursed as the small cup of ice cream slipped through her fingers to cascade upon the hot concrete. It struck with a splat and vanilla goodness sprayed everywhere including all over her sandaled feet. It was a very hot day in California, and sticky ice cream was not a welcome addition. Sweat glistened on her tan skin and dampened her hair slung up in a messy bun.

That’s four bucks down the fucking drain. Christine looked around with something of a pout on her face, noting how many people walking the path were looking at her. There was the occasional laugh; one guy even went so far as to offer a sarcastic pout. Jerk, Christine muttered at him, as she scooped up her little cup of ice cream and tossed it in the nearest trash
