About this ebook

Three hundred years ago, something arose and pushed humanity to the brink of extinction. Now, a small remnant – the ancestors of the few survivors who were able to escape the massacre below – lives above the clouds, on the top of a mountain. But there's been a change. Their water supply is being poisoned. Someone, or something down below is trying to kill them. Now an expedition, including seventeen year-old girl Icelyn Brathius, must descend and face the monsters that wiped out civilization centuries ago.

As Icelyn faces dangers in a world humans are not meant to survive, she learns that not everything is as it seems, and uncovers an ancient revelation, then faces a choice that may change the fate of everyone above and below the clouds. Will Icelyn be strong enough to both survive and bear the terrible secret?

Join Icelyn Brathius as she leaves everything she has ever known to journey to the place no one was ever supposed to go.

"This postapocalyptic YA novel is a fast-paced, fascinating slam dunk of a book. The Threat Below is... a mind-expanding tale of postapocalyptic humanity and truth--and the survival of both."
-5 Star Clarion Review

"A promising debut that could find success beyond the YA market."
-Kirkus Reviews

"What "the threat below" truly is, and what Icelyn and Adorane are taught it is, mirrors the intellectual sea change that often occurs when high school students move on to college. The nature of "the threat below" is an outstanding metaphor for that point in life when everything you thought you knew turns out to be wrong. Latshaw has crafted a YA novel and series whose potential, in this first book, seems limitless. Given his educational background, Latshaw may already see the story as a film; the novel certainly lends itself to adaptation for the big screen... a solid, fascinating read that should garner fans fast. The Threat Below is, to be blunt, a slam dunk."
-5 Star Clarion Review

"Whoa! Can you say epic read? Well, I can, and the title of that read is The Threat Below... I loved this book. Loved. It. Young adult or no, The Threat Below is simply a delightful read for anyone who has an interest in fantasy, action, adventure, dystopian stories or just a unique and inventive piece of fiction."
-Readers' Favorite 5 Star Review

"...Features dangerous treks, tortured relationships, and hidden histories... The characters - especially Icelyn - are well-drawn, as are their tortuous relationships. This isn't just about saving the world - it's about a teenager coming to know herself, a task almost as daunting. Serious ideas about morality and even godhood are grist for the mill..."

Jason Latshaw

Jason Latshaw is a writer who lives in Los Angeles with his wife, two children, a lizard, and a fish. Latshaw has always enjoyed writing. (All writers say that but he states "it's true with me and other writers are all probably lying".) Even when he's not writing, he is, just without a pen or a keyboard. That's why there's often a blank look on his face. Latshaw has an MFA in Screenwriting from UCLA. He also writes television and film scripts. Latshaw was almost kidnapped when in the third grade and (according to the police there at the time) would have been pressed into the sex slave trade in Egypt. He believes his life would have been very different had that happened. Once when Latshaw was only a child he tried to give a homeless man in Baltimore a pound of fudge that he had just spent all his money purchasing, and the man swore at Latshaw and threw the beloved candy away. He still thinks about that sometimes. Latshaw has been in a rock band (actually, 3 of them) and the most recent one was, by many accounts, quite good. Latshaw believes that everyone should be in at least one rock band at some point in their life. Latshaw has never hit a game-winning shot in basketball, but his son, who is not even 13 years old yet, has hit two. Latshaw believes that is better. In his spare time, Latshaw enjoys believing in Bigfoot, Nessie, Chupacabra, the Jersey Devil and all manner of cryptozoological creatures because the world is more fun that way, but in his quieter more honest moments he'll admit that he's afraid that maybe they are all just made up. In his darkest moments, Latshaw is afraid of three things: Serial killers, Alien Abductions, and Sharks. He recently heard a radio show about an entity called the Hat Man the other night, and the Hat Man is trying his hardest to join the club.
