About this ebook

Nina wears two labels: boy crazy and camp drama star. But this summer things are different. First she finds herself interested in Emily's brother, Zac. But everyone knows that brothers are off-limits. Then instead of getting a lead in the camp musical, she gets a smaller part that normally goes to a boy! Much to Nina's surprise, her summer is about shedding the old labels and discovering what she's capable of. With a theme of character growth and development, this book encourages discussion on how plot influences character development, making it a good choice for exercises in critical thinking. A glossary and discussion questions provide additional support.

Nina's NOT Boy Crazy! (She Just Likes Boys) - Eleonora Lorenzet

    CHAPTER 1

Labeled. That’s what I am. Labeled. I’m Nina, the boy-crazy girl. Absolutely everyone at camp says so. But I’m not boy crazy. Not really.

The girls in my bunk, 12A, at Camp Mon Mon Lake, talk about boys just as much as I do. Zoe, MJ, Claire, and Emily have all said how cute some boy or other is. (Not that there are so many boys to discuss at an all-girls camp in the middle of Maine.) But somehow they all think that I’m the boy-crazy one!

Of course, I do like boys—they’re fun. Mostly I’m just friends with them, but I guess I have had my share of crushes. And boyfriends.

Last September, Ryan Burke and I went out for three months. Ryan was super-cute, smart, funny, and athletic. But we didn’t go on dates or anything; we were almost never alone and we’re only thirteen.

But there was this one night—Faye Ottinger’s party. We went outside on her terrace together. Totally alone. Talk about nervous. We were standing there talking about a movie, and then he looked at me and somehow, before I knew it, he kissed me. It was totally unexpected. My first kiss. I’m blushing even thinking about it. We never kissed again. Just that once.

Then he started to follow me around way too much. I was trying out for the school play and didn’t have time for anything else, so we broke up. If I’m so boy crazy, it wouldn’t have bugged me that he was so clingy. Right?

Anyway, whenever he saw me in the hall after that, he totally avoided looking at me. He didn’t look away exactly, but he never made eye contact. I mean, he would talk to me at parties and stuff, but only when we were in a group.

So I guess I wasn’t in the boy-craziest mode when I went to visit Emily, one of my best friends from camp, a few weekends later. After breakfast on Sunday morning, Emily went off to swim team practice. She’s totally obsessed with swimming and there was no way she was going to skip even though I had come all the way from Maryland to Philly to see her. Anyway, while she was out, I planned on doing some boring homework about the colonization of Africa and the Americas. Yawn.

Emily’s brother, Zac, was in some other part of the house. Em has always made it clear that Zac is completely off-limits. I mean, she goes nuts whenever anyone from camp says that her brother is cute or anything like that. So I was a little worried Emily might wig out if she came home and caught me hanging out with Mr. Taboo.

But I was sitting in her den, reading some book about the Dutch colonizing South Africa, when Zac plopped down next to me on the couch.

What are you doing? he asked.

What does it looks like I’m doing? I replied.

    Gymnastics. He grinned.

    I laughed.

Wanna play Xbox with me? he asked.

I’ve never played Xbox. Can you do it if you don’t know what you’re doing? I asked.

Ha! Everyone has to start somewhere, he said. You can figure it out.

Would we have to play one of those violent war games? I asked.

He laughed. Just sports. How about soccer? You wanna try?

If my ‘gymnastics’ was interesting at all, I’d say no. But I’m falling asleep. So . . . okay. I set my book aside.
