    CHAPTER ONE

Ryder held his silence as a man in a dark green shirt and black pants hopped nimbly from the tree. But he secretly fumed as Xander’s call to the man reverberated in his head. He was the son of the emperor of Jaguria. How could that be?!

The forest grew darker every second the sun sank. The man approached them slowly, cautiously. A light breeze brushed at the leaves of the many trees in the thick, heavy forest.

Ryder had sought refuge from imperial soldiers after sneaking out of the monastery, along with Xander, Tristan, and Tristan’s father John. But they had seen Meika in one of the prisoner carts being taken back to the Southern Palace of Excellency Ganesh, keeper of the southern lands of Jaguria. Xander had convinced him there were far too many to attack.

It had been so hard to walk away from her. She needed him, and he’d left her. He could barely stomach what could only be viewed as a betrayal. He should have fought for her. No matter the cost.

It had been John’s idea to seek the secret village deep in the great Forest of Kosa. He had spoken, as Meika had, of rumors of a safe haven out of the grasp of the emperor. A refuge for freed or escaped prisoners that had been unfairly persecuted, for the emperor in his greed persecuted many innocents.

They had, Ryder believed, finally stumbled upon the edges of the village they sought. A man had stopped their progress. Then Xander had revealed his secret. Ryder could scarcely believe his ears. How could Xander be the son of the enemy they fled?

The man finally stopped in front of Xander as he studied his face. There are few left save the imperial court who could argue your claim one way or the other. How am I to know you speak the truth?

I am a man of my word, Xander told him. But perhaps there is a way for me to prove to you I hold no loyalty to the emperor.

The man’s eyes narrowed on Xander. What way is this?

I mean to storm the Southern Palace, Xander stated boldly.

A single brow rose. "Do you now? And how do you intend to
