    Chapter 1

    Rose

I clenched my hand on the handle of my briefcase as I sat in the crowded waiting room.

I was the only woman there, which made me feel self-conscious of my pencil skirt and sensible heels, but I immediately squashed that feeling.

I wasn't embarrassed about being a woman and I liked skirts, damn it.

But if my appointment didn't come up soon, my nerves might get the best of me.

This was exactly why I'd told Willy he should have been the one to pitch to Landon Hayes. But he'd insisted that I knew the most and it was my baby.

I'd let myself be convinced that I could do it- and then promptly second-guessed myself the whole time.

If our proposal wasn't accepted because of me...

    Rose Mallory?

I looked up to see a smiling Asian woman in a sharp suit looking at me.

I guessed it was pretty obvious I was probably the only Rose in that room.

I smiled back at her and stood up to follow her.

I could do this. I was an independent, intelligent woman and I knew this project inside out. It was my idea and I'd done the vast majority of the work on it.

It really was my baby. And I would do my best to make sure it had the best chance to succeed.

The woman stopped in front of a heavy wooden door.

She must have felt my nerves because she turned to me with a sympathetic look.

Honey, don't let him intimidate you. He's all bark, she tried to reassure me, squeezing my forearm.

    I won't, I said with a strained smile.

Fake it 'til you make it, right?

With another smile at me, she knocked briefly and opened the door, ushering me inside.

Rose Mallory for you, Mr. Hayes.

    Thank you, Mai.

I swallowed as Mai quietly closed the door behind me and Landon Hayes stood up from behind his desk to greet me.

I'd seen a small picture of him attached to the brief biography Willy had printed out for me to read.

But it did not prepare me for the reality of the man.

I was used to being the shortest person in the room at only a couple of inches above five feet. But Landon Hayes must have been almost six and a half feet tall. And if that wasn't enough to intimidate, he obviously spent plenty of time with weights because his broad shouldered frame was obviously muscled under that probably ridiculously expensive suit he was wearing.

Weres tended to be athletic anyway, but he stood out even among us.

One of the reasons he's been on the top of my list in the first place was because he was a werewolf and I'd heard he believed in helping his own when he could.

I just hadn't been prepared for the affect his physical presence would have on me.

His black hair was cut short, his golden eyes set off by his level brows and dark eyelashes. His five o'clock shadow was already in existence even though it was only just passed lunch.

I wouldn't call him conventionally handsome. Not in the way of runway models or teen heartthrobs anyway.

No, he had something much more nebulous that packed a much harder punch- sex appeal.

Sex appeal coupled with a magnetism that was undeniable.

He probably would have made a killing on the big screen.

Of course, he wasn't doing too shabby as it was.

Thanks for coming, Ms. Mallory. I'm Landon Hayes. He smiled and held out a hand that I automatically took.

It was warm and dry, large enough to cover my hand. He didn't shake my hand, just clasped it between his hands briefly before letting go and stepping back.

Please, have a seat, he invited.

I sat down automatically in the chair he indicated, still without saying anything.

    I should really say something.

    Thank you.

Riveting conversation starter it wasn't, but I was glad I got something out.

I was just reviewing your proposal. It's very interesting. How many investors do you have attached?

    Get it together.

    None.

He raised his eyebrows as he sat back.

None? You can't tell me nobody else has seen the potential here.

We haven't gone to anyone else. It seemed a lot simpler to hold out for one big investor than have to deal with multiple ones. And then we heard you were looking and...

You have your work patented? And you own it?

Yes. Currently I own all of my work and the patents are in order. I took a deep breath. "Honestly, I
