    A Christmas Wish

    Go get it, boy, Cole said, tossing the slick tennis ball down the yard. The green ball bounced against the damp lawn, as if mocking Cole's dashed hopes for a snow-enriched Christmas.

    Sliding into the soft grass on all fours, Maximus managed to catch his quarry. He returned to Cole, spitting the tennis ball into the boy's hands. The mutt resembled a fuzzy football, quivering with anticipation for the next toss.

    Glancing inside through the sliding door, Cole blindly tossed the ball. Dad and Mom were busily stacking presents under the tree. If Santa had time to put the gifts in Mom and Dad's bedroom, why didn't Santa have time to stack the gifts under the tree?

    Dad wore black sunglasses over his eyes, rubbing his temples occasionally. Mom hovered at the tree, organizing the gifts by size, while Dad dropped off armfuls of cargo into a heap on the couch next to her. After depositing the last load, he pulled out his phone and wandered into the kitchen. These days there was always something going wrong at the factory.

    Maximus' angry barking pulled Cole from the view. The tennis ball sat up in the crook of their small maple tree. Odd, Cole didn't remember throwing the ball that hard. Maximus tried in vain to scramble up the tree. The dog stared at Cole indignantly, barking in displeasure.

    Shhhh, Cole said, hurrying to Maximus' side. He scratched the dog behind the ear, but Maximus didn't accept the comforting gesture, barking up at the tree with even more intensity.

    Dad's wearing his sunglasses today, Cole warned. He hates loud noises when he's wearing those things. You know that.

    Maximus growled angrily,
