CHAPTER ONE
Quicksilver hit the damp ground hard on all fours. The jarring impact rattled her bones and snapped her teeth together. Her pulse thrummed discordantly in her ears as dark spots danced across her vision. Blood dripped from between her lips.
She knew she was dying. Knew it as sure as she had ever known anything. The attack had been unexpected. Crimsonstar seemed so calm in the face of her accusations, she had almost doubted herself. He’d brought her tea. Said they should talk. And she had been willing to listen. Yet another mistake.
The tea tasted fine, but he must have slipped in a silver shot, otherwise her natural healing abilities would be working to repair her battered body and they weren’t. He’d attacked, thinking her too weak to defend herself. Well, he’d thought wrong.
Now, time was running out. Quicksilver needed help and fast if she hoped to survive the night, but she dare not seek it out in her current form. Not here. She would only frighten the humans and risk further danger to herself.
Quicksilver closed her pale gray eyes and dug her fingers into the earth. A shudder rolled through her body. The muscles across her back tightened as her wings retracted into the hollow spaces lining her spine. Prickles of pain like a thousand tiny needles danced across her nerves. Silver feathers melted into ebony skin.
She breathed through clenched teeth, holding back the urge to purge her roiling stomach. Part of her wanted nothing more than to collapse. To keep her eyes closed and sink into blissful oblivion. But her will to live was too strong.
Opening her eyes, Quicksilver pushed herself to her feet. A chill breeze brushed across her bare skin. Though park where she now found herself was wrapped in darkness, the surrounding city threw enough light into the night sky to enable her to see. Through a screening of trees, she spotted a busy road. Therein lay her only hope of survival.
She stumbled forward, pressing her hand against the worst of her wounds; a deep cut in her lower abdomen. Why Crimsonstar didn’t use a silver blade and finish her off when he had the chance was a question with no answer. True, a steel blade could kill her as easy with her healing abilities suppressed as they were, but it seemed sloppy work not to be certain. Too sloppy for him.
Cars whizzed past Quicksilver as she broke through the tree line and climbed a slight slope. It was possible no one would stop to help. Humans always had to be so wary of one another and she was aware she must have cut a strangely gruesome picture, standing there by the side of the road covered in nothing but blood.
A small, blue car slowed as it passed, and then pulled over. The driver side door opened and a young man stepped out accompanied by a blast of indie rock. He stood regarding her with one hand still on the door. Do you need some help?
Yes.
The world had gone gray around the edges. Please.
Quicksilver found herself falling again. This impact was twice as jarring as the first.
A moment later, the young man was kneeling at her side. He was maybe seventeen, with dark hair falling across his forehead and hazel eyes. He took in the sight of her blood and his light brown skin paled. Whoa. What happened to you?
Quicksilver, too exhausted to think up a plausible lie, said nothing.
Can you stand up again?
He laid his hand gently on her shoulder. You need a hospital.
No hospital,
she rasped. With a hospital visit would come reports and people with questions she could not answer. Too dangerous. Besides, they wouldn’t be able to help her anyway. Only one thing could save her now, much as the thought disgusted her.
I think you’re in shock.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out his cell phone. I’ll call an ambulance.
No.
Quicksilver grasped his wrist with as much strength as she could muster and stared into his eyes. Putting a compulsion on a kind soul who was only trying to help didn’t sit well with her, but she had no choice. She could not have authorities getting involved in this.
Quicksilver pushed the silver thread of her own will into the subconscious area of the young man’s mind. You don’t want to call an ambulance.
I don’t want to call an ambulance.
He repeated the words in a flat monotone, his expression gone slack.
You want to put me in your car and—
She paused as the world shifted in and out of focus. Her strength was waning fast. Put me in your car and take me somewhere private. Somewhere safe.
Somewhere private. Somewhere safe.
He lifted her into his arms with a grunt. His build was slight and she was not a small woman.
Quicksilver rested her head against his shoulder. You’re going to help me. Help me so I don’t die.
Don’t die,
he murmured.
The backseat of the car felt softer to Quicksilver than the finest of mattresses. Again, the temptation came to drift off. But it would mean losing her control over her rescuer and she didn’t dare. Instead, she focused on deep breathing. Each inhale and exhale brought fresh pain to her chest and served to help keep her sharp.
Crimsonstar wouldn’t come for her tonight. She had perhaps not given as good as she got, but he hadn’t walked away from their encounter unscathed. He would need time to recover and to plan his next attack. And there would be a next attack, she was sure of it. Crimsonstar had to know she would never let this slide and he would prefer in this case to be on the offensive rather than finding himself as the hunted prey.
Lights flickered across the roof of the car for what seemed a terribly long time to Quicksilver. Her healing abilities were not even attempting to kick in and she was beginning to fear the silver shot had damaged her more badly than she had at first suspected.
The car stopped and her rescuer came around to open the door. He stared in at her with the owlish gaze of one who has completed his task and is now awaiting further orders.
Help me out of the car.
Her voice had been reduced to no more than a whisper, but it seemed loud enough as the young man reached inside to do just that. Though he was carful, Quicksilver still had to bite back a cry as her broken ribs slid into each other.
Once out of the car, however, pain was chased away by a sense of alarm. They were in a neat little residential area with a tree lined street. Lights blazed in the windows around them. This was not the sort of secluded place she’d intended
