Preface
Dear Adult Reader,
Ask anyone familiar with A Christmas Carol what it is about and you will probably be told it is about a man who doesn't like Christmas. Wrong. That isn’t the point of the story. It’s about a man (Ebenezer Scrooge) who doesn't think the welfare of his fellow man is his responsibility or concern.
Scrooge is a man with a love of money above all other things. He and Jacob Marley had been business partners when Marley was alive. Marley’s ghost visits Scrooge in the beginning of the story to warn Scrooge that if Scrooge continues going through life in the same uncaring manner toward humanity as has been his custom (as had been Marley’s custom, also), Scrooge will be doomed for all eternity (as Marley is).
Children everywhere have been introduced to A Christmas Carol thanks to live performances, pop-up books, coloring books, and Christmas Carol movies starring cartoon characters. However, many of these child-friendly versions stray far away from what Dickens wrote. For instance, in one of the pop-up books I came across, Bob Cratchit is presented as Scrooge's nephew. It is Fred who is Scrooge's nephew; Cratchit is Scrooge’s clerk. To me, such an inaccuracy is a great injustice to Charles Dickens. It's his story, and it shouldn't be changed.
In Your Child’s First Introduction to Charles Dickens’ Christmas Carol, I have used the parts of Dickens’ tale that bring the true meaning of the story into clearer focus for your child, although I'm sure he or she will still need help understanding it. Since I have abridged the original version down to its bare essence, I have made slight changes for the sake of clarity--changes such as adding names of characters when they are first introduced. In the unabridged story, a character might not be named in the same place as it is in my abridged version.
I have kept the words of Charles Dickens intact, even the now-archaic terms. For instance, Dickens calls his chapters staves.
Stave
is a musical term meaning the staff on which musical notes are written. A staff is comprised of five lines and the spaces between them. Notes are written on the lines
