    Three’s A Charm

Edward is happily married, with a great career, a beautiful wife...and a secret. Years ago, he had a night he will never forget—with another man. When the opportunity arises again, how will he reconcile his desire to be faithful with his other, deeper desires?

Every morning, the routine was the same.

His alarm went off, precisely at 5:30, and his wife groaned—a guttural noise that sounded out of place coming from her long throat and small, delicate mouth—and threw one arm up over her head, rolling away from him.

He sat up, blinking the sleep away from his eyes, and swung his legs out of bed, toes touching the cold hardwood floor abruptly, shocking him out of sleep. There was a thick white rug on his wife’s side of the bed, she couldn’t bear the cold floor first thing. She liked to ease slowly out of sleep; he preferred to be jolted out of it, pulled into the morning.

From the bathroom he could hear his wife’s small grumblings and the creak of the bedsprings as she began to get up. He felt a small spark of annoyance, as always, at the intrusion. He quickened his pace with the razor, feeling the pressures of the day begin to creep in, the need to hurry up and finish, to get dressed and get on with it.

His closet was hung neatly, rows of pants ordered by color, shirts and jackets the same. He took down dark brown pants, a cream colored button-down, and a tweed jacket. On the other side of the room, his wife was digging through her own wardrobe. He knew what it looked like without having to turn his head—drawers of jumbled clothing, hangers haphazard above them, and some clothes shoved in beneath the hanging rod. He heard a sound of surprise—she’d found some lost, much-loved item that she’d forgotten about. It happened fairly often.

By the time he’d finished dressing and combed his hair, she was gone. He could hear the clink of pans in the kitchen, and he followed the sound. His breakfast was sizzling on the stove, and he could smell the grainy scent of oatmeal boiling. He ate nearly the same thing every day—two eggs over easy, a piece of wheat toast, and two pieces of bacon. On
