About this ebook

Paul has been running from his tormented past for eight years. When his old high school crush reaches out to him online, he finds himself unexpectedly drawn to her. She represents everything that he couldn’t have growing up, and a world he may have left behind too soon.

Angela is mourning the loss of her husband, and seeks comfort from her old friend. When it’s time to get her husband’s farm cleaned up and ready to sell, she calls on Paul to fill his shoes; in more ways than one. She doesn’t expect much, just a roll in the hay; her gay best friend Eric takes care of her emotional needs.

Eric adores Angela, and would do anything for her; but the one thing she desperately needs is the one thing he can’t provide. He supports her decision to seduce the man she’d been infatuated with since the loss of her husband, and makes himself scarce to facilitate it.

Eric’s return to the house begins a fast-paced emotional rollercoaster for the three lonely souls as each of them is forced to confront their pasts, their sexual needs, and their guilt.

When there’s nowhere left to run, will Paul find the strength to do one good thing?

    One Good Thing

Paul’s gut clenched as he entered his hometown. It hadn’t changed much in the eight years he’d been gone; but then, neither had he. He still lived moment to moment, following the wind. He had never expected to follow it back here.

Then again, he’d never expected to become infatuated with Angela, either. When she found him on Facebook last year, she was happily married and they reminisced about high school in a platonic sort of way. Then, just over a year ago, her husband died in a tragic accident, and everything changed. Suddenly Paul was the shoulder to cry on, the constant in a changing world. It was new for him, and he wasn’t sure what to do with it.

So he’d done what he always did. Accepted the change, and followed where it led him. It led him through intense conversations and sleepless nights, followed by heady infatuation on both sides. Now it was leading him to her house, to work and play and help lift her into the next stage of her life. Three months of physical labor and a no-strings rebound affair was exactly what Paul thought he needed.

In six hundred feet, turn left, his phone instructed.

He turned onto a narrow, winding road. After the second bend, the asphalt fell away, and he bounced over a pothole-riddled dusty road for half a mile.

Your destination is on the right.

He turned into a driveway lined on both sides with wild, unruly elm trees. They scratched at his truck, leaning drunkenly into the drive. Soon they fell behind him, revealing a peeling two-story farmhouse with a wraparound porch. The paint had faded to a non-descript grayish color, and tumbleweeds dotted what was left of a lawn. The whole place had an air of depression and hopelessness. He earnestly hoped he could change that.

Paul! You made it! Angela flew from the house, golden-brown in the afternoon sun, blue-black hair streaming behind her. She was his opposite in every way; where he was tall, muscular, and blonde, she was short, pleasantly curvy, and dark. A rush of affection washed over him; he saw the awkward teenage girl he’d known, wrapped in the powerful woman she’d become. She jumped into his arms and embraced him like a long-lost brother.

Lover, he corrected himself. Long-lost lover.

He slid his hands to her hips and pushed her away just enough to gaze at her beautiful face. He touched a finger to her slightly crooked nose, and traced the deep dimple on her left cheek. Her brown eyes softened and warmed,
